Ad | Our Review Of EnChroma Colour Enhancing Glasses for Colour Blind People

EnChroma specialise in colour enhancing glasses for people with colour vision deficiency. I have 3 colour blind sons, and first discovered EnChroma's glasses a few years ago. I'm delighted to say they are now selling in the UK, and asked if we wanted to work with them on a review, and because I am very happy to endorse the glasses, I also have an affiliate link and a 10% Discount Code ...

If you know nothing about colour blindness, then a few years ago I wrote a post explaining what causes red-green colour vision deficiency, who it's likely to affect, and why my sons' colour blindness is my fault genetically (sorry boys). I also covered some of the early signs I spotted, and pretty much everything else you might want to know about having a child who is colour blind

Being colour blind is incredibly common. It affects around 1 in 12 men (8%) and one 1 in 200 women (0.5%). That’s about 350 million people in the world right now.

EnChroma are very clear. Their glasses don't offer a cure, they offer a specific type of colour enhancement, which will not work for everyone. Unfortunately they don't create glasses for people with the much rarer blue colour vision deficiency, this is only for red/green colour blind people. Of those, around 9 out of 10 people will be able to see a far larger range of colour. The switch may be instant, and a real "wow" moment, or it may take a little while for the wearer to get used to the glasses.

EnChroma have a brilliant colour vision test on their website - and that will be your first stop if you are considering glasses - or just if you want to find out if you are colour blind. My 3 boys all inherited their colour vision deficiency from me, and have Deuteranopia - an inability to see green. Bizarrely this actually turns their world into shades of khaki, with occasional hot pink... (which explains why they always chose pink toys and sweets when they were little).

There are several different styles of glasses, and they include indoor or outdoor (proper UV rated sunglasses), and different sizes to fit anyone age around 5 or older. The glasses can be worn at the same time as your contact lenses, and they have a 'Receptor Fitover' style to wear with prescription glasses.

My boys went with the Colby Sun Lens Age 10+ for my 11 year old, and the other 2 chose the very similar Ellis Sun Lens.

Bravely we went ahead and filmed all 3 of my colour blind boys trying their glasses at once... here's how they got on, in our 5 minute video...

I think that you can see clearly the 2 younger boys had an instant reaction, whereas my older son took a little while to get used to his new vision, but we did have a 3/3 success rate! I couldn't be more pleased really, and I admit I may have shed a tear or two. I'd have felt awful if we'd had 2/3 and one disappointed young man. Bless em...

All 3 of my sons have worn their glasses a good 8-10 hours a day since they opened them last week, which is probably more important information than first impressions, and really is the proof to me that they are comfortable, and that the view through them is better than without them.

Here's the technical information:

  • EnChroma’s eyewear is made in their medical device manufacturing facility in Berkeley, California.
  • Lens material is made with Trivex®, an optical-grade resin that delivers a best-in-class combination of impact protection, lightness, and clarity.
  • EnChroma lenses block 100% of the UVA and UVB radiation components in sunlight.
  • Lenses are clad with an optically clear, thermal-crosslinked coating to provide added lens durability.
  • EnChroma lenses feature dual-surface anti-reflective coatings to reduce reflections by more than 90%.
  • A superhydrophobic (water repellent) surface treatment makes the lens slippery so that dust and dirt can be easily removed with a quick wipe of the included microfiber cloth.
  • EnChroma glasses come with a signature box, cleaning cloth, microfibre carrying bag, user guide, and colourful balloons (the balloons are brilliant!)
  • EnChroma backs up every purchase with a 60-Day Money Back Guarantee and 2-year Warranty
  • My son's glasses cost £163.20/£171.60. There's an option to pay in 4 x fortnightly installments to spread that cost out across 2 months.

We're all impressed. When I saw videos online I always wondered if it would be a gimmick, or if there would be a real difference for my sons. We've never really considered colour blindness to be anything very unusual, and obviously my 3 boys didn't know what they were missing out on, plus they all have each other, so didn't feel like the odd-one-out. The EnChroma glasses really have opened up a world to them which they didn't realise existed. It's bright and colourful, and they like it a lot...

We were working with EnChroma, and received a discount on our glasses in return for the time taken to do the review and video. We were not paid, or asked to be anything other than entirely honest - even if the colour-enhancing lenses had not worked for any of my sons. *If you buy through my affiliate link then I can receive a small commission - it all helps keep the website running.
