COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News weekend update 1st /2nd August 2020.

COVID-19 Coronavirus UK and World News weekend update 1st /2nd August 2020.

The UK added 744 cases today and now has reported a total of 304,695 positive cases of COVID-19. We completed 162,088 tests yesterday. 1,230 people were in hospital on Thursday 30th July, with 86 using a ventilator on Friday 31st.

In the 24 hours up until 5pm yesterday, we lost another 8 people who have tested positive to COVID-19. We now very sadly have a total of 46,201 losses of life in all settings.

England 262,746 / 41,589
Northern Ireland 5,948 / 556
Scotland 18,676 / 2.491
Wales 17,315 / 1,565
Rep. Of Ireland 26,162 (+53) cases and 1,763 losses of life.

There have now been a total of 18,136,195 reported cases worldwide. The number of people who have lost their lives worldwide to COVID-19 is 690,806. Already 11,406,201 people have recovered.

A new case of COVID-19 is reported to the World Health Organisation on average every 3 seconds, and a higher number of cases are being reported each day.
While a vast swathe of Europe has hopefully passed it's peak (and we are in the suppression stage, catching clusters and with the ability to test even asymptomatic people), the Americas, Africa and Asia are still on a rise towards the height of their epidemic. On Saturday Mexico overtook the UK as the country which has lost the third largest number of people, behind Brazil and the USA. This is far from over.

There are some reports that the UK 's shielded category could be expanded to include a large amount of over 50's in future. Not because you're old,  but because you have a higher risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID.
Naturally this doesn't come directly from government, it was "leaked" to press. Which is getting boring now. There must be a running tap to a couple of news outlets because they announce something new every Sunday, days before we get any official word. It may be to test public reaction, but it's highly unprofessional and implies our government can't keep anything secret.

The Scottish Government have yet to implement a border patrol, but it seems a sensible way forward really Nicola. They have however said:
"People living in Scotland should avoid travelling to areas in northern England due to a spike in #coronavirus cases.
The areas of northern England you should avoid include:
Greater Manchester
East Lancashire
Parts of West Yorkshire"

The world's biggest vaccine manufacturer is going for it, and they've chosen the Oxford Vaccine candidate first. Head of The Serum Institute, Adam Poonawalla, has announced plans to make 1 billion doses of the vaccine, even though it isn't even proven effective yet. Half will be distributed in India, and half around the world, with a focus on poorer countries.

The Australian state of Victoria has  declared a State Of Disaster, after reporting 671 new cases and 7 losses of life on Saturday. This is a huge blow and they have had to impose extra restrictions in the Melbourne area, where the outbreak is concentrated. From midnight Sunday:
- All pupils return to home learning
- Curfew from 8pm until 5am
- Residents can only shop or exercise within 3 miles (5km) of their home.

Trump of the Yesterday:
"Big China Virus breakouts all over the World, including nations which were thought to have done a great job. The Fake News doesn’t report this. USA will be stronger than ever before, and soon!"
1. Stop being racist Donald, you sound like a 5 year old calling someone poohead repeatedly.
2. You shared a news article about Melbourne. In the news. They had reported it.
3. Loving that positivity.

Thousands of people marched in protest at restrictions in Berlin yesterday, in a Day Of Freedom.
Hello? Have you not even considered the difference between Germany and, oooh, the USA? Just take a second to look at what's happened there after their marches.
Translated press is reporting that "participants included right-wing groups, anti-vaxxers, and conspiracy theorists."
Cases in Germany have been rising recently, and none of the people attending the protest were wearing masks, because they were "taking back our freedom", so that isn't going to get better any time soon.
How long to I need to isolate for uk

Awwwww dammit. Just when you thought your own citizens had more sense. Hundreds of people have marched in London's Oxford Street to complain against mask-wearing.

If you are thinking of doing a sociology, anthropology or psychology degree, you really do have plenty to study right now.

Luxury Cruise News:
Even while ships are STILL trying to repatriate staff in some parts of the Pacific and Asia, some cruise lines have reopened, and are disembarking on new Summer 2020 holiday cruises.
No prizes for guessing what has already occurred...  Yes! Obvious as it was to all of us, apparently they hadn't realised it may not be wise to resume floating hundreds of people out to sea on giant shared housing.
TUI and AIDA have both reported crew members testing positive before passengers even arrived, and TUI's first cruise after restarting has been cancelled because they don't have enough staff to run it.
Authorities in Tromso, Norway, yesterday reported 36 positive tests for crew members of the MS Roald Amundson, which has just docked and let off 177 passengers after a week long trip.

I've wanted to go on a Hurtigruten Cruise for about 20 years. At one point I even thought I might get married and have a cruise honeymoon. Sadly life got in the way and that's still a dream, but if you offered me a cruise right this minute, I would have no hesitation in turning you down. Sorry guys.

Less Than Luxury Cargo Ship Crews News:
Business Insider estimates around 300,000 cargo ship workers have been unable to set foot on land for months due to port restrictions, and they are increasingly unhappy, and unable to cope.
Cargo continues to be delivered, but crews can't change, so contracts have had to be extended, meaning some crew have now not been ashore for a whole year.
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is warning of the increasing risks of mental health breakdowns, mutinies and accidents.

Famous People With COVID:
India's second most senior politician, Home Minister Amit Shah

Authorities in Spain and The Netherlands have killed over 1 million mink after coronavirus outbreaks in farms. Around 87% of mink sampled tested positive. The outbreaks are being studied to see if the mink can pass the Covid-19 back to humans, as well as catch it from us, because that appears to be the case for at least 2 employees.
Firstly, I'm glad they don't treat humans like that. Secondly, I'm gonna say yes - but you'd have to be low down (because they're very short and they've got tiny breaths) or disturbing their living areas by actions such as sweeping and mucking out. Thirdly, imitation fur really is a clever thing isn't it.

Trump of the Day:
He started early today with a classic.
"MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Donald, you're already in power mate. You've been there for almost 4 years.

The Murder Hornets are back - remember them? Washington State officials just found and managed to capture one, and now they have around 2 months to find and destroy the nest before breeding season. Asian Giant Hornets are around 2inches (5cm) long and like to spend their Autumn killing honey bees and eating their larvae, so it's 'tag, track and burn' for you guys.

"Since April, more than 2700 Service Personnel have spent nearly 1 million hours providing Coronavirus tests to those who need it most." UK Ministry Of Defence.

6 months ago I published a blog post called "What Is Coronavirus - And Are We All Going To Die From COVID-19?" I had to update it almost every day at first, as new evidence came in. At that point we still didn't really know how this was going to go. We still don't. That lack of control can be very hard to live with. Give yourself a pat on the back, you've earned it.

Some numbers. All of them we once the most beautiful thing their parents had ever seen:
