Updating your children’s room on a budget

When your children outgrow their existing bedroom décor, or simply want something fresh, you may be willing to support them in exploring their identity within their personal space. However, depending on what they have in mind, this may not be possible on your budget. Rather than completely shutting down their ideas, you may want to find different ways to allow their creativity to flourish, and create a room they will be proud of, without requiring a lot of expense.

Use coloured lighting

Repainting your child’s walls may not be a possibility, especially if your children share a bedroom and have opposing ideas regarding colour schemes. Instead of making one or both of them go without, you could instead change the look through different coloured lighting. You may be able to buy a few sets of this LED tape to go around your children’s beds or skirting. This could allow them each to have the colour they like, within their own section of the bedroom. If the bedroom walls are already white, or another light tone, this lighting could be especially effective. You may want to set rules regarding not touching each other’s sets, and making sure they are switched off when asleep or leaving the room, to prevent both excess cost and arguments breaking out.

Refurbish old furniture

Should your children want different furnishings in their bedroom, you may be shocked at how much these could cost, especially if they want a number of different items. Rather than accepting this expense, you could consider how you might be able to spend time as opposed to money. If the furniture is still in good condition, or works as intended, you may be able to refurbish it. Something as simple as repainting the bed frame could help to give it a new lease of life and fit in with your child’s new colour scheme. You may want to do your research before buying paint and getting started, to ensure that you can complete the job as successfully as possible.

Make it yourself

Some items could be completely made by you, or even your child. This can include any fabric items, such as lampshades or even curtains. Not only could this allow you to decorate your child’s room with their exact specifications, but it can also be a lovely way to show them just how much they mean to you. For easier crafts, or if your children are a bit older, you may also want to use this as an opportunity to spend some time together doing something fun. At times, you may want to look into the cost of raw materials and tools required in case it is actually cheaper simply to buy the item.
Decorating your child’s bedroom can allow them to have a space that suits their personality and style. When you don’t have much money to spare, you may want to think about how you can still make some great changes that they will love, without spending a lot.
