COVID-19 Coronavirus, HPAI H5N1 Bird Flu, Measles, Tropical Imports and Other Virus UK and World News Update 5th September 2025
From January every eligible child in the UK will receive a chickenpox (varicella) vaccination with their MMR jabs (MMRV).
"Research shows that chickenpox in childhood results in an estimated £24 million in lost income and productivity every year in the UK. The rollout will also save the NHS £15 million a year in costs for treating the common condition."
Mild chickenpox can still be awful and leave you with scarring. Severe chickenpox is rare, but does happen. It can cause infections, pneumonia, encephalitis or a range of problems with organs, including the brain, eyes and heart. Chickenpox during pregnancy can affect your baby. Any baby born with chickenpox will be very poorly.
Chickenpox vaccination also helps protect against shingles - which is where dormant varicella virus hiding in your body (often for decades) reawakens and can make you very ill. 10 years ago my partner got meningitis from dormant varicella springing back into action and making it into his head.
I strongly agree with vaccinating against varicella.
NHS England:
From 1 September, all severely immunosuppressed adults aged 18+ will be able to get the shingles vaccine from their GP.
"This includes people with conditions such as leukaemia or lymphoma or those who are undergoing chemotherapy, which put them at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell if they contract shingles."
This is another varicella vaccine, although it contains no complete or live virus (it's just a reminder for your immune system and safe for vulnerable people). You should get an invitation to book from your GP next month.
The UK Government has raised our wastewater game:
"We've announced a £1.3m programme to evaluate how wastewater monitoring could help detect a wide range of dangerous pathogens including mpox, West Nile virus and Lassa fever."
We already monitor the UK for Polio, and wastewater is an incredibly useful tool for COVID, flu and various other diseases, including rare or new diseases.
The evaluation will cost £1.3m.
I honestly don't think they need to evaluate, we know it works. Maybe just design, fine tune and set the darn thing running.
COVID stats across the UK are still at low levels, with a very slight ongoing increase. In the US that increase is bigger and relentless, rising by around 15% each week for the last 5 or 6. Last week the US had 9,314 COVID hospital admissions and 295 people died.
The Ministry Of Health in DRC (Democratic Republic Of Congo) yesterday officially declared an Ebola outbreak in Bulape, Kasai province.
The first patient was a pregnant woman and they have 15 confirmed cases, 28 suspected cases and 16 of those people have already died (case fatality rate is around 57%).
This is their 16th Ebola epidemic, and it has a lot of cases very quickly, but the good news is they have an excellent record for stopping Ebola spread. They really are superb at track and trace.
Astoundingly, within 1 hour of receiving blood specimens, scientists were able to publish almost the complete genetic sequence of the Ebola virus (99.97%, consisting of 18,819 nucleotides) and confirm this outbreak is most closely related to a sample collected from a human in 1976 - meaning it has been quietly existing in an unknown animal population for decades, and this is a whole new animal-to-human spillover unrelated to other human Ebola outbreaks.
RFK Jr couldn't get the CDC head to do what he wanted, so he did it himself.
The US has made HUGE changes to COVID vaccinations, announced by RFK Jr on Twitter:
"I promised 4 things:
1. to end covid vaccine mandates.
2. to keep vaccines available to people who want them, especially the vulnerable.
3. to demand placebo-controlled trials from companies.
4. to end the emergency.
In a series of FDA actions today we accomplished all four goals. The emergency use authorizations for Covid vaccines, once used to justify broad mandates on the general public during the Biden administration, are now rescinded.
FDA has now issued marketing authorization for those at higher risk: Moderna (6+ months), Pfizer (5+), and Novavax (12+). These vaccines are available for all patients who choose them after consulting with their doctors.
The American people demanded science, safety, and common sense. This framework delivers all three."
The changes mean that COVID vaccinations in most of the USA will only be available via a doctor, and only to people aged over 65 or deemed 'high risk'.
A University College London study has found Metformin can reduce the risk of long COVID by 36% in adults who are overweight or obese.
They studied 624,308 patient records to find 2,976 who began taking metformin within 90 days of COVID-19 diagnosis.
When they looked again at sub-groups of people (by sex, age and other factors), the results were the same - but unfortunately why it works is speculation for now (although it could be to do with lowering inflammation or reducing sugar in the bloodstream). More research is ongoing.
The study builds on data from an earlier and much smaller study, which did not find the same benefit in people of lower weight groups.
RFK Jr has had a very busy week.... (if you've come here from the short Facebook version, "hi"). Shall we begin...
Last week what remains of the US CDC (after funding cuts and firing of thousands of staff) imploded.
Newly installed Director Susan Monarez (according to her legal team) refused “to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts.”
Various sources, including STAT News, say Monarez was called into a meeting with RFK Jr and his deputy, Stefanie Spear. "They asked for her resignation, citing concerns about insubordination and her integrity, including instances related to vaccine policy".
Monarez refused, and was offered another option - she should accept all recommendations from RFK Jr's new hand-picked vaccine committee, and fire some of her top level staff.
Monarez refused, and was sacked.
All hell then broke loose and 4 top-level CDC officials publicly resigned.
- Director of the 'National Center for Influenza and Respiratory Diseases' Demetre Daskalakis
- Director of the 'Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance, and Technology' Jennifer Layden
- Director of the 'National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases' Daniel Jernigan
- Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry
Crowds of CDC staff walked out in support, to wave them off as they left (and wonder if there was any sanity left in the world).
Director Daskalakis pulled no punches in his resignation letter, which was purposefully posted on X. Some choice quotes:
"I am unable to serve in an environment that treats CDC as a tool to generate policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality and are designed to hurt rather than to improve the public’s health. The recent change in the adult and children’s immunization schedule threaten the lives of the youngest Americans and pregnant people."
“I have never experienced such radical non-transparency, nor have I seen such unskilled manipulation of data to achieve a political end rather than the good of the American people.”
"Having to retrofit analyses and policy actions to match inadequately thought-out announcements in poorly scripted videos or page long X posts should not be how organizations responsible for the health of people should function."
"We are seven months into the new administration, and no CDC subject matter expert from my Center has ever briefed the Secretary. I am not sure who the Secretary is listening to, but it is quite certainly not to us."
"I must also cite the recklessness of the administration in their efforts to erase transgender populations, cease critical domestic and international HIV programming, and terminate key research to support equity as part of my decision."
"Public health is not merely about the health of the individual, but it is about the health of the community, the nation, the world. The nation’s health security is at risk and is in the hands of people focusing on ideological self-interest."
So, yeah...
The White House responded that Monarez had been fired because she was "not aligned with the president's agenda", which has to be one of the scariest comments ever when you are talking about a lifetime medical professional vs. a politician.
The White House doubled down, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller called RFK Jr, "a crown jewel of this administration" and "one of the world's foremost voices, advocates and experts on public health". Miller also said that RFK was 'working hard to restore the credibility and the integrity of CDC, which is one of the world's most foremost public health bodies'.
(Erm, nope. He's destroying everything, including trust and credibility.)
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also said: "I understand one of the individuals who resigned from the CDC wrote in his departure statement that he identifies pregnant women as pregnant people, so that's not someone we want in this administration anyway."
It doesn't matter if you are pregnant, you're still a person. And it doesn’t matter if you are trans, you're still a person.
So the US CDC has a new head. Monarez was replaced by RFK Jr's Deputy Secretary of US Health and Human Services Jim O'Neill.
Jim has no training in medicine or health care, but he does have bachelor’s and master’s degrees in humanities, and previously ran investment funds and projects for billionaire Peter Thiell, so he's obviously a great candidate.
Brilliant.
Jim impressed all of the scientists and medics yesterday by tweeting all his medical knowledge:
"During the pandemic, public health authorities obstructed toddlers’ breathing with cloth masks, gave gene-altering therapeutics to children, conspired with unions keep schools closed, and discredited low-cost medications in favor of expensive and ineffective biologics."
For clarity Jim, regular face masks do not obstruct breathing, mRNA can NOT alter anyone's genes, and which low-cost medications are you talking about, because no study found Ivermectin actually useful against anything other than parasites such as worms and scabies?
It is incredibly sad to see such a highly respected and trusted institution destroyed so thoroughly, and so quickly. I wish anyone in America the best of luck.
By next week the US CDC will probably be run by someone's nan, with half a bottle of gripe water and a c.1986 open tube of Savlon.
In this weeks first round of RFK Jr vs Science, on Monday 9 former heads of the US CDC published an open letter in the New York Times titled "We Ran the C.D.C.: Kennedy Is Endangering Every American's Health".
Can't be more clear really.
They say the period since RFK Jr became Health Secretary is "unlike anything our country has ever experienced" and Dr Susan Monarez's sacking as CDC director adds fuel to a "raging fire".
The letter criticises RFK Jr's actions in removing research funding, sacking thousands of Health and Human Services workers, making vaccines more restricted, agreeing with legislation that could cost millions of Americans their health coverage and generally just being a very dangerous man to have in charge.
Kennedy responded by saying the CDC has "strayed" and public trust has been damaged by "bureaucratic inertia, politicised science and mission creep".
(He still thinks he's fixing something, when the world is watching a guy with a clear agenda experimenting on humans in ways far beyond his understanding or skillset.)
RFK Jr must have a backbone of steel, because on Wednesday a group of national medical, scientific, public health and patient organisations called for him to resign "to ensure the health of the American people".
The Infectious Diseases Society of America released an open letter signed by over 20 organisations (including the American Public Health Association, the Societies for Microbiology, Virology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Healthcare Epidemiology, American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology etc).
They cite problems and weaknesses evolving or occurring in Food safety, Diagnostic testing and expert consultation, Infection tracking and surveillance, Public and provider education, Chronic disease prevention and management, Emergency response, Longstanding epidemics (e.g. AIDS and STIs), Health and safety throughout the lifespan, Vaccination, and State and local health departments.
Presumably they felt that was enough to begin with...
On Thursday (yesterday) US Senate Democrats called for the resignation of health secretary RFK Jr, or for him to be fired by Trump. It came from a surprising new area - the finance committee. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon's statement:
“Robert Kennedy’s tenure as America’s chief health officer has been marked by higher costs, more chaos and boundless corruption.”
“His actions are endangering children, leaving parents confused and scared…Democrats knew from the start that Robert Kennedy would be a disastrous health secretary - it’s time for Republicans to step up and hold him accountable for his actions.”
(Of RFK Jr.’s 203 days as HHS Secretary...) “every single day, there’s been an action that endangers the health and wellness of American families.”
RFK Jr's Republican side won the vote, he got to stay and hit back with what I presume he felt were strong words:
"Under President Trump’s leadership, we at Health and Human Services are enacting a once-in-a-generation shift: from a “sick care” system to a true health care system that tackles the root causes of chronic disease. Finally we have an administration that is taking action."
Honestly, preventing people becoming sick, ill or disabled is obviously far better than treating them afterwards. I think we all agree... but destroying vaccines, research and staffing isn't going to achieve that.
The Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey, has launched the first State rebellion, announcing 3 new initiatives to ensure residents have access to vaccines:
- requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of vaccinations recommended by state health officials
- enabling pharmacists to continue to supply COVID vaccines
- launching a public health collaboration between 8 Northeast states
Ms Healey:
"It's a pretty sad statement that we can no longer trust the federal government, but that's where we're at."
Meanwhile in Florida... on Wednesday Joseph Ladapo, the state’s Surgeon General, said they will be removing all child vaccine mandates (polio, mumps, measles, hepatitis, tetanus etc).
Flipping awesome. History lessons will spring to life, and the kids can have a real idea of what it's like to live in the Victorian era.
Ladapo said vaccine mandates drip with "disdain and slavery", and that God will be pleased they're removed. He was caught altering study data in 2022 to make COVID jabs look dangerous for young men, so, ermm, I guess we already knew he wasn't keen on vaccines.
To be clear, parents can still take their children for vaccinations, which may or may not continue to be free, but they won't be required for public facilities such as school.
This human experiment would make more sense if we didn’t actually have loads of data from before vaccinations and from areas with low vaccine coverage today. We already know what happens.
Researchers in the USA have spent since 2022 studying links between alcohol intake and increased risk of illness, including cancers. Now 3 of the co-authors have told Vox that "they were informed last month that the Trump administration did not intend to publish the final draft of the study or its findings".
If RFK Jr really wants to 'make America healthy again' then why not publish and consider the results of the report?
Spoiler, the report (as discussed in depth in Vox) looked at cancers, liver disease and accidents, and shows that 1 drink a day gives you increased risk, 2 drinks a day times that by 40.
Before we put him out of our thoughts for the rest of the day...
"RFK JR: I’m looking at kids as I walk through the airports today...and I see these kids that are just overburdened with mitochondrial challenges, inflammation—you can tell from their faces, movements, and lack of social connection."
RFK Jr
Erm yeah. Scientists aren't happy with this at all, and many are calling for his removal.
"Scientist here. Mitochondria do not present challenges to faces, movements, or social connections. Maybe those kids just don’t like you because you’re staring at them like a creep who wants to give them measles."
Angela Rasmussen (American virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada)
"I'm sorry but what?
Our Health Secretary says that he sees kids at airports and can tell by their faces that they have mitochondrial challenges
This is wacky, flat-earth, voodoo stuff people
This is not normal"
Ashish K Jha MD MPH (White House COVID-19 Response Co-ordinator 2022-23).
Those are a couple of the polite responses. Madeuppious maximus.
Since my last report, the UK has confirmed another HPAI H5N1 Avian Flu infected UK poultry flock in Devon. The US has not confirmed any new infections in humans or cattle, and only 4 newly infected poultry flocks.
After the death of another cat, the US FDA has issued a warning statement to cat owners about another raw cat food - RAWR. Batches of the frozen raw food were found to contain H5N1.
Seriously, how can it be worth it? Just feed them cooked meat.
The Philippines has approved a new jab for birds against avian flu.
The vaccine provides immunity against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 and also stimulates the bird’s immune system into action against velogenic Newcastle disease - which obviously I've never heard of, but is apparently a big problem for poultry in The Philippines.
Farmers are delighted. With an average annual income of just over £2000 they cannot afford to lose their birds.

Botswana has declared a national public health emergency due to a shortage of essential medicines and medical equipment. They face a debt of over £55m which they already owe to private medical facilities, and have had to temporarily suspended referrals for elective surgeries and non-urgent medical conditions (this even includes transplant surgeries).
The value of diamonds (one of Botswana's main exports) is currently very low, much of the funding from the US has stopped, and the cost of medical drugs and treatments is soaring.
The military will now oversee distribution of emergency medicines - which include treatments for things like high blood pressure, sexual health and TB, as well as basic equipment like bandages and stitches.
Louisiana oysters infected with flesh-eating bacteria Vibrio vulnificus have now killed 6 people and sickened another 28.
There is always a risk whenever you put anything in your mouth, and oysters have a bad reputation, but this is far beyond any normal year. All evidence suggests they're being caught and stored correctly, and this was simply unfortunate.
There is a respiratory virus spreading through Gaza, and because everyone is already broken and malnourished it is having an horrific effect. Local healthcare teams are suggesting it is a new strain of flu because it is spreading so easily and making people very sick.
Having had flu where 2 of my family were hospitalised and I was far more poorly than ever before or since, I can't imagine trying to survive it when water and food are limited, and you are living in a dusty tent with none of your stuff and little chance to keep anything clean. In those conditions even the most minor ailment can quickly become deadly.
Chikungunya is proving an issue in France, with the highest level of infection since 2010. Between 1st May and 26th August 2025, 228 locally acquired cases of chikungunya were recorded in mainland France. This is an increase of 74 cases since the last report on 20 August 2025.
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne disease, very similar to dengue and Zika virus. Symptoms include headache, nausea, fever, a rash and severe joint pain which can persist for many months.
The UK reported 73 travel-associated cases between January and June 2025, compared to 27 during the same period in 2024.
No locally acquired cases of chikungunya have ever been reported in the UK.
While we're on Chikungunya, bad news as the US has suspended the IXCHIQ vaccine licence after 4 people developed a Chikungunya-like illness. Only one 82 year old was hospitalised and discharged after 2 days.
France recently used this vaccine to combat a massive outbreak of Chikungunya in La Réunion (and I'm guessing this is where the 4 patients had their severe reactions). It already carried a warning that side effects are known to occur occasionally, especially in older or sicker people.
The US Measles outbreak has been slowing considerably, with just a couple of notable outbreaks still - Wisconsin has reported another 9 cases (of 23 total), and Ohio has a cluster of 3 unvaccinated siblings.
Latest figures for England aren't entirely rosy, with 742 laboratory confirmed measles cases reported in 2025 - including 131 in May, and 126 cases in both June and July - the UK HSA are referring to this as "stable". (That's 'stable high' rather than 'stable low as we'd like'.)
Last year there were 2,911 confirmed cases of measles in England alone.
Latest statistics show almost 1 in every 5 (18.6%) of school starters in England has not had all of their vaccinations. Measles isn’t good for experiments, contact your GP to check if you could've missed one.
It isn’t just the US and UK with a measles issue. This week's lesser reported country is Kyrgystan, which has had a measles outbreak since 2023.
In the last year they've reported over 8,800 measles cases - 94% were unvaccinated. Health officials are reminding parents that childhood vaccinations are free at all healthcare facilities.
Michael Coston at AFluDiary has a great article about a flu outbreak right now in Denmark.
When weekly Influenza A cases suddenly shot from 19 to 115, researchers quickly spotted that most patients had an almost 100% identical and slightly-mutated variant, so must have caught it at near enough the same time and place. It didn't take long to spot a link with Smukfest music festival in Skanderborg.
Excitingly we haven't been told what the mutation(s) are (although it doesn’t seem more severe), and it's impossible to tell if it's going to simply die out, be killed just as effectively by this year’s vaccines, or spread around Europe this Winter.
The USA has its first ever human infection with New World Screwworm. The patient lives in Maryland and had recently returned from El Salvador. They have received treatment and are recovering.
Screwworm is on it's way North, already affecting Mexico and terrifying cattle farmers in Texas.
There's an interesting article in VetMed looking at malaria, and brucellosis. Brucellosis is not diagnosed very often, but scientists were aware that sometimes it is misdiagnosed as malaria, so they did some research.
Both malaria and brucellosis cause joint pain and fever, but malaria is caused by parasites carried by mosquitoes, and brucellosis is caused by bacteria carried by animals. They have very different treatments.
The team, from Texas, visited sites in several countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, South Africa, and Armenia. They found that around 4-11% of human malaria cases were actually brucellosis, and that even if there was a 0.25-4% rise in brucellosis diagnoses, it would be 2.1 to 7 million cases.
Brucellosis can ultimately be deadly without antibiotics, so this discovery could be a lifesaver for millions of people.
Japan's birth rate is down 3% on last year, and 30% over the last decade.
It might seem like small numbers, but it’s huge. You need the right ratio of carers to cared-for people, and the right ratio of wage-earners to non-wage earners, or you're in a mess.
Maybe this is how the age of the simulacrum* begins...
(*robot people)
Scientists have diagnosed the cause of the world’s first recorded pandemic.
Studying 8 teeth from a mass grave underneath Jerash’s ancient Roman hippodrome in Jordan, they found all contained Y pestis - the same plague which caused The Black Death (our second major recorded pandemic in 1346-1353), is usually spread by fleas on rodents, and still kills occasional people even now.
The first documented pandemic, The Justinian Plague, began in 541CE (AD/CE common era) and continued until around 750CE, killing 15-100 million people worldwide. The mass grave was used between 550 and 660CE.
Nowadays we just hit it with 10 days of antibiotics.
Aren't antibiotics awesome.
Remember the UK Emergency Alert system will be tested again this Sunday 7th September at 3pm. Should be exciting if you're at a football match!
It is the weekend! Hurrah! It's been a long week here and I know for a lot of you the children went back to school, so it's a hard week for a lot of folk. A couple of days taking it easier and not having to get up and out of the house in time will be very welcome to a lot of people. Do not forget to treat yourself! Do something nice for you, something that will make you feel good. Those little things are never wasted time.
I shall be back in 2 weeks, until then...
