COVID-19 Coronavirus, Flu, H5N1 Avian Flu, Measles, Tropical Diseases and other virus UK and World News Update 17th October 2025

COVID-19 Coronavirus, Flu, H5N1 Avian Flu, Measles, Vaccination and other virus UK and World News Update 17th October 2025

The UK Government and NHS have caused a nightmare for Pharmacists by massively reducing the number of people who are eligible for an NHS COVID jab, and then allowing ineligible people to book an appointment anyway. The National Pharmacy Association were quoted last week as saying their members were reporting around 1/3 to 1/2 of all COVID jab bookings were people who they aren't authorised to vaccinate.
NHS England say they've fixed the online booking system now, but literally millions of people who had Winter COVID and flu boosters last year are only eligible for flu this time, and eligibility for flu jabs has been widened, which has only made the problem worse. For reference...
NHS flu jabs for Autumn/Winter 2025 are offered if you:
- are aged 65 or over by 31 March 2026
- have certain long-term health conditions (list online)
- are pregnant
- live in a care home
- are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer's allowance
- live with someone who has a weakened immune system
(Frontline health and social care workers can also get a flu vaccine through their employer.)
NHS COVID boosters for Autumn/Winter 2025 are offered if you:
- are aged 75 or over by 31 January 2026
- are aged 6 months to 74 years and have a weakened immune system because of a health condition or treatment (list online)
- live in a care home for older adults
It's no wonder there's confusion. Millions of people have previously been eligible due to age, and now aren't, despite not getting any younger. Please don't take it out on the Pharmacist, it wasn't their decision. Private jabs cost around £100 each.

England has had a relaxing 10 months of low COVID figures - the arrival of new variants did not immediately shake the UK over the Summer like it did Asia - but it's not quite so rosy a picture right now. There is a spike in cases and England actually has more people in hospital with COVID right now than at any point last year. Flu season isn't quite with us yet, but 2 weeks ago (last available data) 50 times as many people were hospitalised with COVID than with flu. It’s become so troublesome that the NHS has reissued an advisory that any adults over 18 with a positive COVID test should stay at home for at least 5 days, and people under 18 for 3 days. They don't actually recommend testing (ah, the Trump method - no testing, no official cases), just go by symptoms.
England is not currently monitoring COVID levels in wastewater (no, I don't know why either). Scotland still is, and this wave has not really hit Scotland yet, although hospitalisations have been increasing over the past fortnight. It has reached Wales, and looking at the figures, including wastewater charts shared by numbers bloke Bob Hawkins on Substack, it has also reached most of Europe.
Christina Pagel and other UK scientists are suggesting this has little to do with the new variants, and far more to do with waning immunity. Protection after infection is good for only around 6 months, and the eligibility for free vaccinations is increasingly small in the UK, leaving most people badly protected. It's likely we are not going to see the end of this wave for a little while yet.

The Japanese Government have declared a flu epidemic. Flu season has arrived very early, around 5 weeks earlier than expected. 6,013 cases were reported in the week ending 5th October, with some media reporting as many as 4,000 people have now been hospitalised. Around half of the first 247 people admitted to hospital were children under age 14, and over 100 schools have been closed.
It's not special flu, it's the well-known H3N2 strain, and the early arrival may be due to changes since COVID, lower vaccination rates, global weather patterns or something else.
There are also spikes in cases in neighbouring countries, including Malaysia, and New Zealand and Australia just had a couple of particularly bad months. This could potentially signal the start of a heavy Winter flu season around the world. Fun times ahead.

The UK is also seeing an early 'uptick' in flu, and most cases that have been subtyped are H3N2. Our outbreak is also very much centred among school-aged children and younger adults. We have an increase of around 50% hospitalisations week on week (week ending 12th October), but official comment is we are still at 'baseline levels'.

COVID flu and RSV levels over the past 2 years charts from Christina Pagel link below

It isn't just human flu which is arriving early in the Northern hemisphere, bird flu is arriving back from it's Summer break in warmer climates and making itself known.
The UK moved to the new 2025-26 season at the beginning of October. Last season 2024-25 there were a total of 81 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) reports, the last of which was a commercial poultry flock in Cumbria on 28th September. This season started with a confirmed infection in commercial poultry premises outside Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on 9th October. Since then we have 2 confirmed infections in England - captive poultry in Stockbridge, Hampshire on 11th October and a commercial poultry flock of over 10,000 birds in Wybunbury, Cheshire on 13th October.
Annoyingly the US Government is in shutdown, so I'm not entirely certain how accurate US figures are, which is pretty poor timing as migratory birds begin to return. USDA does seem to be working, and in the last 30 days reports 1 newly infected dairy cattle herd (on 10th October), and 47 newly infected poultry flocks (26 commercial, 21 backyard) - this accounts for 6.33 MILLION birds.
Egg prices haven't gone up yet, but it's to be anticipated as the new season gets underway...

This is potentially a biggie. Researchers from the University of East Anglia have used technology developed by Oxford BioDynamics to create the first ever blood test for diagnosing myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).
The pilot study involved just 47 severely debilitated ME/CFS patients and 61 'control' healthy subjects, but it's already peer-reviewed and had a fabulous 96% accuracy.
The researchers discovered that people with ME/CFS have unique differences in chemical tags (epigenetic markers) on their DNA, and using the test they were able to identify 92% of people with ME/CFS and 98% of those who were healthy.
A huge proportion of people with Long COVID are disabled by chronic fatigue, and no amount of sleep helps. It's incredibly hard to diagnose, and also very difficult to explain to people, in large part because sufferers can be accused of 'being lazy' rather than actually disabled. The blood test can speed up and confirm diagnosis, and would be incredibly welcome, plus finding a specific issue also means that researchers can begin to try and work out ways to treat it.
More testing is needed to ensure results are replicated on a larger scale, but with around 250,000-400,000 sufferers in the UK alone, it shouldn't be difficult to recruit test subjects.

Text over image of medicines in blister packs WHO AMR common infections now more expensive to treat

A WHO report has found that 1 in 6 bacterial infections worldwide in 2023 were resistant to antibiotics. This doesn't necessarily mean the antibiotics didn't work at all, but it might mean they took longer to work, needed a 2nd course or a different antibiotic had to be used instead.
Antimicrobial resistance is a massive problem. We only have limited options, and being told that doctors have tried everything and can no longer help, when 10 or 20 years ago you'd have been able to recover fairly swiftly, must be utterly heartbreaking.
Always finish the whole course of antibiotics, even if you feel better, and never dispose of unwanted antibiotics down the drain, because they can end up in rivers. In the UK you can take them back to the pharmacy.

Last week we had a Chikungunya update from the World Health Organisation:
"Since January 2025, over 445,000 suspected and confirmed cases and 155 deaths have been reported from 40 countries, including previously unaffected areas."
Two days ago America reported it's first locally-acquired case in 6 years. The patient is a Long Island, New York resident who has no recent travel. This is the first ever locally-acquired case in New York.
Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease that causes fever and severe joint pain which can persist for months or even years. There is no treatment for Chikungunya except painkillers.
It is most common in slightly warmer climates with potential for open standing water, including Sri Lanka, India and Mauritius. Recently there was a horrific outbreak in Reunion, and there have been at least 27 clusters of local transmission in Europe this year, centred in France and Italy.
In the first six months of 2025, England reported 73 travel-related cases, compared to 27 cases during the same period last year.
There are 2 vaccines available (including in the UK), which are often recommended before travel to affected areas.

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus (varicella) sitting around quietly in your body and then, for whatever reason, reactivating. This can be 6 months, 6 years or 60 years later. It can reactivate once, multiple times or never at all. Previous research has shown clearly that the varicella virus can also affect your brain, and has an association with dementia, including Alzheimer's.
This association with Alzheimer's is backed up by a new US study of 100m U.S. electronic health records from 2007 to 2023, which has found that people aged over 50 who had shingles at least 2 times had a 7-9% increased risk of developing dementia over the following 3-9 years, when compared to people who only had shingles once.
The following was one heck of a wormhole, because I saw so many different conclusions and opinions. I think it hasn't been splattered all over the mainstream press because no-one is really confident on how exactly to report on it....
Shingles vaccinations are designed to block varicella reactivation, so they reduce incidence of shingles - and therefore also we'd hope, dementia. Studies back this up, including a 2022 Welsh study which found that giving older people the shingles vaccination (Zostavax) reduced the chance of dementia by around 20% over the following 7 years.
The new US study compares between the old 'live' vaccine (Zostavax) which is no longer given, and the newer vaccine (Shingrix) which is not based on live virus.
In essence the comparison between Zostavax and Shingrix suggests that the newer vaccine Shingrix is 17% MORE effective at preventing dementia than Zostavax. In theory that would mean by getting 2 doses of Shingrix, you reduce your chance of developing dementia by up to 35-40% (efficacy does vary by age and sex - the older or more female you are, the more of a difference). Amazing, but somehow too good to be true.
In reality it's possibly not that simple. Studies of other vaccinations have also suggested they reduce dementia by around 20%, including the flu vaccination. Keeping physically and mentally active, having regular eye tests and hearing tests also seems to reduce chance of dementia. However having all of your vaccinations and new glasses every couple of years etc doesn't just add up and up until you get 0% chance of dementia (sadly). It's more likely that giving your immune system a little nudge by vaccinating kicks it awake and gives an overall benefit. Going for your vaccinations (being social, active and getting new glasses) also suggests you have the money and capacity to care about your health and are looking out for yourself (or someone else is). People who received older vaccine Zostavax grew up in a slightly different time, they had a different lifestyle, and there's no control group of very similar people for comparison.
Whatever the exact figures are, what is clear is that getting a shingles jab once you are passing middle age is DEFINITELY good for your health. It does appear to be a very cost-effective way of reducing dementia, and increasing the length of time people live free from dementia.
In the UK Shingrix is offered to adults aged 65 or over.

Ontario, Canada's measles outbreak has finally ended. Last Monday it was 46 days since any new reported cases, which is double the incubation period, and Public Health Ontario made the happy announcement.
The outbreak began on 18th October 2024. Since then 2,375 Ontarians have been infected, and a newborn baby died.
Overall up to 4th October (latest stats) Canada has reported 5,060 measles cases (4,696 confirmed, 364 probable) during 2025.

161025 Bob Hawkins Substack COVID wastewater across Europe charts

CEPI, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, has announced a massive partnership with the world's largest vaccine manufacturer SII, the Serum Institute of India.
Together they will be 'practising' responding to a future pandemic with the aim to create a vaccine within 100 days, and they will be using H5N1 avian flu for the project.
This can only be a great thing on several levels, as H5N1 is a prime candidate for our next real-life pandemic.
They'll produce and compare two H5 antigens (the part of a vaccine which stimulates your immune response) - a fairly normal wild-type and an AI-optimised, broad-spectrum H5 antigen designed by scientists at Houston Methodist Research Institute. The broad-spectrum approach should work across multiple strains of H5 viruses, rather than focussing on one, so it's particularly suitable for a new outbreak which might be unpredictable - we don't know exactly which strain might become a pandemic, and as it passes through millions of bodies a virus can evolve quickly (flu can recombine, mixing and matching sections with other flu virus if they're both inside a human at the same time).
The project will be funded by up to $16.4 million.

Trump Of The Fortnight:
It's RFK Jr... We'll gloss over his comments about 'WiFi crossing the blood-brain barrier' because it's provably an impossible and frankly insane concept (damn, I was sweeping up some Wifi earlier and now I'm not sure if I was careful enough), and move to 'circumcised children have "double the rate of autism"'. RFK says this is probably because they're given Tylenol (paracetamol) for the pain. Tylenol again has no proven link to the causes of autism.
He didn't offer evidence to support the claim that circumcised children have double the rate of autism, but it's easy to fact-check. Highest rates of Autism are found in Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Brunei and Australia. Corresponding rates of circumcision are approximately 15%, 75%, 9%, 52% and 27%. So, erm... that's a nope, I'm not seeing a pattern there.
Double-edged this one, because personally I'm very much against removing useful parts of babies bodies before they can, as an adult, make the informed decision to mutilate themselves, so I don't want to put anyone who believes this off.... So sure, absolutely, don't get your baby circumcised unless it's medically necessary etc.

England has hit the UNAIDS targets for the 6th year running text on a billboard with a person walking past

"England has hit the UNAIDS targets for the sixth year running. That means:
- 95% of adults living with HIV know their status
- 99% of adults diagnosed are receiving treatment
- 98% of adults on treatment can’t pass on the virus"
UK HSA.
These figures do vary depending on which demographic you fall into, with young people aged 15-24 least tested or protected.
New diagnoses fell by 4% across the UK from 3,169 in 2023 to 3,043 in 2024, and deaths among people living with HIV decreased by 14%, from 751 in 2023 to 643 in 2024.

Bad news if you got anosmia free with your COVID infection. Scientists studying the loss of sense of smell haven't found very encouraging long term results. They discovered that 2 years after infection, 80% of people (4 out of 5) who reported changes to smell still performed poorly in tests. Around 25% (1 in 4) had hardly any sense of smell or none at all. Excitingly around 60% of people who didn't report an issue also performed poorly, suggesting they may have been unknowingly affected, or were naturally losing their sense of smell through aging.
I developed anosmia around age 13, possibly due to chickenpox, rubella and mumps infections back-to-back, and I have to say that over the past 5 years whatever sense of smell I did have has waned substantially. I'm now blissfully unaware of most bad smells, but over the 40 years have learnt to recognise what I call 'particles in the air' when food is bad. I did once fill my house with gas, and had no idea at all - so, you know, be careful...

The Maldives has become the first country in the entire world to achieve 'triple elimination' of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis.
WHO: "No babies were born with HIV or syphilis in 2022 and 2023, while a 2023 national survey confirmed zero hepatitis B among young children (first grade of school)."
The Maldives spends over 10% of their GDP (national income) on health. Well done to all of you.

The UK spends around 11% of GDP on universal healthcare, as does Canada. 10% of GDP is spent on universal healthcare by Finland, New Zealand, Spain and Australia. Brazil spend 9% on theirs, Norway 8% and Ireland 6% (source World Bank).
The United States government spends almost 17% of GDP on healthcare, but has an insurance-based system, so simply calling an ambulance can bankrupt you for life. A 2020 study led by Yale University estimated 68,000 Americans die each year because they can't afford available treatment, yet US health insurance companies made $68 BILLION in profits in 2022.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why the private insurance-based healthcare system is a ridiculous farce to be avoided like the plague. It costs the individual more, it costs the country more and it is worse for your health. It is literally a money-making scheme for the super rich, who profit financially from the deaths of ordinary people. So there.

It is baby loss awareness week. My thoughts are with everyone affected. Whenever, however.

Baby Loss Awareness week/ Text saying 'you need to move on' crossed out and replaced with 'take all the time you need to grieve'

It's the weekend! Hurrah. I'm still shattered from a fantastic trip to Rock City, Nottingham last weekend - proving I've still got it, but I need to sleep it off afterwards! I'll be having a glorious lie-in to treat myself, I hope you do something to be kind to you too - you've earnt it!
It's also Diwali on Monday. I wish an excellent time to all who celebrate, and all of the rest of us who get to enjoy your lights and celebrations too. I'll be back in 2 weeks, until then...

Radiation oncologist here. It takes high energy “ionizing” radiation to disrupt molecular & cellular structures. The EM radiation from WiFi isn’t ionizing and is absolutely negligible compared to background radiation from cosmic rays and radon etc.
You’re more dangerous than WiFI

Nuclear engineer here.
There is no such thing as wifi radiation.  There is no ionization from wifi.
The idea of wifi crossing the blood-brain barrier is nonsense.

physicist over here.
No known conclusive interaction between WiFi (electromagnetic waves between 2.4-6Ghz commonly) and the chemical/mechanic mechanism of the BBB.
The only possible interaction is from the
RF-EMF induced due to the proximity.

Atoms are neutral. They have negatively charged electons orbiting around a nucleus of positively charged protons. Ionizing radiation has the ability to knock electons out of orbit. Both the free electron an the atom become charged particles called ions.
Wifi can't do that.
