COVID-19, H5N1, Bundibugyo Ebola, Measles, Vaccination and Other Virus and Health UK and World News Update 28th August 2026
COVID levels are on the rise in the UK, and elsewhere in the Northern hemisphere, however they remain low. They've been low for quite some time, so it's not a surprise we are seeing a rise now, although it would have been even nicer if it had at least waited until the schools were all back and we could have had something to blame it on.
The US has massive Salmonella outbreaks linked to 14.4 million eggs from Texas and fresh Jalapeño peppers from Mexico. Around 100 people have been hospitalised through both outbreaks.
Belgium is dealing with it's largest ever salmonella outbreak. Around 2 million eggs have been recalled and 306 people were sick enough to have been tested and confirmed infected.
If you think you are safe from salmonella in the UK, you usually are - as long as you use Lion Marked eggs from vaccinated UK hens, or cook your eggs thoroughly. The UKHSA has issued a report stating that on 26th May they noticed an increase in Salmonella, and cases had the same lineage (they're genetically related). As of the latest update on 25th August that outbreak numbered 259 confirmed cases and sadly 1 person has died. There are also 2 smaller outbreaks of 38 cases, and 177 cases.
Cases have risen quite dramatically since June, and imported eggs or egg dishes are suspected to be the cause. Around 38% of confirmed cases have been admitted to hospital and at least 2 people developed blood stream infections.
For most people Salmonella is a couple of days with a bad tummy and they won't even see a doctor. It's not pleasant, but usually resolves without treatment. If you cannot keep water down, are ill for more than 3 days or are especially vulnerable (frail or already ill, very young or old etc), always get advice from your GP.
Talking of bad tummies, the US Cyclosporiasis outbreak didn't exactly go away while I was on holiday. Delays in reporting and testing meant that cases have continued to pour in, and the number confirmed as of 24th August was 17,180 with 922 people hospitalised. Sadly 2 people have died. Another 11,844 cases are unconfirmed, and countless people won't have sought medical care at all. Michigan and Ohio are worst affected states, but cases are almost everywhere in the US.
Over a month since the Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce recall was issued, and the US FDA finally last week began inspections of production premises.
H5N1 Avian Flu has hit Australia like a speeding truck. Over 300 infections or infection clusters have been reported since the first case just 2 months ago. There have already been 3 mass mortality events which have killed around 1,000 Crested Terns on islands off the coast of Southern Australia. A Little Penguin was found dead on Kangaroo Island in Tasmania 2 weeks ago, and heartbreakingly another 28 deceased Little Penguins were found off King island a week later.
Australia's first bird flu case in a mammal has been confirmed in a Long Nose Fur Seal 150km South of Adelaide, and sadly this has been followed by a suspected case in an urban Red Fox in an Adelaide suburb.
Australia isn't sitting back and allowing this to happen, and has begun vaccinating a range of rare captive and wild birds. A trial vaccinating native captive birds has taken place over the past 18 months, and vaccinations will be rolled out over the next few weeks. Rare and endangered species will be prioritised. Trials will continue in order to hopefully create vaccines suitable for a range of different birds of all sizes, and also for mammals.
Vaccination of wild birds and animals is tricky, because it requires 2 doses at least 2 weeks apart. Phillip Island has the world's largest colony of Little Penguins and Australia have announced the world's biggest wild bird H5 flu vaccination. They intend to vaccinate up to 5,000 of the 40,000 Little Penguins - made possible because this species return to the same home burrow every night, so giving them 2 doses of vaccination without having to catch and kidnap them for at least 2 weeks is plausible.
Australia are also considering the psychological effects of H5N1 on humans. The Australian Antarctic Division will send an icebreaker to collect all personnel from Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. It is a World Heritage wildlife sanctuary and home to 4 million seabirds and 100,000 Elephant Seals. When H5N1 Avian Flu arrives, it is likely to be utterly devastating, just as it was when it arrived at Heard Island earlier this Summer, and no-one should have to bear witness to that.
Honestly this is thoughtful and humanitarian, and utterly heartbreaking.
Vaccination rates continue to decline with the proliferation of misinformation and confusion. Honestly you cannot blame a lot of these parents - they believe they are doing their best. They are not. The US CDC report that during the 2025-2026 season only 92.4% of pre-school children had completed their MMR, well below the 95% required for herd immunity - meaning younger siblings and vulnerable children and adults who cannot get immunity from vaccination are not protected either.
If you think that's bad, hello UK. Our figures are sooooo disappointing.
Yesterday's figures show that for children starting primary school uptake rates for vaccines such as MMR and the 6 -in-1 (which includes diphtheria, whooping cough and polio) have remained stable for the past 3 years - and it's the sort of stable that you could describe as a bit shoddy:
- 2 doses of MMR vaccine measured at 5 years of age: 83.8% in past year (2025-26); 83.7% in 2024-25; and 83.9% in 2023-24.
- 6-in-1 vaccine measured at 5 years: 92.9% last year; 92.8% in 24-25 and 92.6% in 23-24.
With no scientific basis whatsoever, Donald Trump has signed an executive order urging that the MMR is broken into 3 separate jabs - despite separate jabs not even having approval for use from the US FDA. Hilariously this was called "Delivering Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations For Americans".
It will NOT make less people autistic. It will not save lives or health. It WILL make it far more inconvenient and expensive for parents to get their children vaccinated, and reduce immunisation levels substantially. The US is carrying out an experiment on their children which will yet again disproportionately affect the poorest and most disadvantaged families. No genuine scientist is excited to see the results. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) continue to strongly recommend the joint MMR vaccination, as well as the jabs Trump and RFK Jr have taken off the recommended list, and at least 23 US states have decided to continue to follow the AAP advice rather than make the downgrades recommended by the US Administration.
RFK Jr followed this with: "It's hard to know if vaccines are safe."
There are literal mountains of evidence, and more coming in by the bucketful each day. However many times people do the maths or re-check the trials, and look at the data on the billions of humans who have been vaccinated, he will not accept it. He has decided to die on this hill, please don't follow him.
The Executive Order and RFK's mutterings prompted WHO to publish a statement which stopped just short of calling them screaming idiots, which was a shame. Here are a few lines - full text in the image...
"Every parent wants to keep their children safe, and vaccines are among the most powerful tools for doing that, making deadly diseases preventable.
WHO is concerned that recent changes to US immunization policy are not aligned with decades of evidence that show when children are most vulnerable to disease, when vaccines provide the strongest protection, how many doses are needed, and which vaccines can be given together safely... The current evidence is unequivocal: vaccines - including the MMR vaccine - are safe and do not cause autism... Delaying vaccines or separating doses unnecessarily does not make vaccination safer and can leave children unprotected... Vaccination policy should be guided by rigorous, independent and transparent review of the best available science, not by political influence."
The UK Government also felt obliged to remind people that doctors and medically trained professionals are better people to give you health advice. It begins with...

No you aren't. The US has the highest number of cases since measles was considered eliminated in 2000, over 500 more already than the whole of last year at 2,777 (on 20th August). Cases are still going up and vaccination rates are still going down. It was announced this week that 2 unvaccinated people in Pennsylvania have become the first to die from measles within the state in 35 years.
Canada on the other hand - 1 new measles case since last report. They have had 1,117 this year so far, which isn't good, but it looks like they may have it under control.
The UK also seems to have a level of control over our measles outbreak. Just 18 cases in the last 4 weeks, for a total of 970 this year.

As of yesterday the Bundibugyo Ebolavirus outbreak in DRC numbers 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 confirmed deaths. 843 people are in hospital in isolation. This is the tip of the iceberg. It was a while before they were able to test people, and they still don't test everyone. They don't even know about a lot of the infected people, even if they succumb to the disease.
DRCs Ebola outbreak is widely expected to become the biggest ever, cross borders and kill upwards of 10,000 people. It is not contained, it is still outrunning all efforts to track and contact trace. In July 80% of new patients had no obvious links to other confirmed cases. There are still more infected people being cared for at home in the community than there are in treatment centres. Around half will die, and their bodies remain highly infectious after death.
The areas affected are so remote and roads so poor that motorbike riders are becoming a major part of the response - transporting patients and the bodies of deceased people.

The UN warn that only 48% of the money needed has been secured so far, and the response is in danger of running out of money just at the point they are able to ramp up. Current resources will only last weeks, not months.
While Bundibugyo Ebolavirus vaccines are in trials, 2 animal studies have shown the already licensed Zaire Ebolavirus vaccine Erevbo may offer some cross-protection. WHO's technical advisory group have decided to release 70,000 doses of Ervebo from the global Ebola virus disease vaccine stockpile for a 'priority ring vaccination clinical trial'.
20,000 doses will be for a Phase 3 clinical trial, and 50,000 doses will be given to frontline and health workers - vaccinations began yesterday.

A 5th Bundibugyo vaccine candidate from Egyptian company Minapharm will receive up to US$16.5 million from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) for human trials. It is based on their 'proprietary modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA)' vaccine platform, MVA-CR19, which has proven successful in licensed vaccines for Smallpox, Mpox, and the related Zaire Ebolavirus.
Uganda has passed the 42 day monitoring period without any new cases of Bundibugyo Ebolavirus, so can declare itself Ebola-free. Congratulations to all involved, although I say that tentatively and with respect, because it is some kind of miracle. Fingers crossed it continues.
It's been over 5 years since scientists began warning us that a COVID infection can “wake up” dormant viruses that are already in our bodies. There have been several studies since showing 'viral reactivation' for all kinds of things from Epstein-Barr to Shingles, and a newly released study has put all of the information together to create a comprehensive picture from 1,154 patients who were hospitalised with COVID up until the middle of 2021.
They looked at viruses that can be reactivated, and when they reactivate.
The patients gave nasal swabs during the year after having COVID - and almost half had a virus they were already carrying reactivate. More than 10 different viruses reactivated. In most cases these were Epstein-Barr (mostly while still in hospital), Cytomegalovirus (mostly in the few weeks after discharge) or other herpesviruses.
Anelloviruses, which are incredibly common and considered harmless, causing no symptoms in humans, were also commonly reactivated while in hospital and during the few weeks after discharge. They were associated with more severe COVID illness and ongoing Long COVID symptoms such as brain fog, so maybe they aren't quite as harmless as we think.
Small scale trials are already underway to see if preventing virus reactivations can reduce risk of Long COVID, or even help with Long COVID itself.
And while we're on 'why you may have Long COVID'... Researchers from University of California have found that the immune system of people with Long COVID can produce chronic inflammation in the gut, but fail to eliminate the virus remnants, so they battle it out at stalemate for months or even years. Persistent reservoirs of COVID virus particles is a common theme which has come up again and again.
Although the virus was present in the gut, it was not easy to spot in other tests. The researchers suggest helping the body "overcome immune dysregulation and clear persistent viral reservoirs" could be the key to ending Long COVID symptoms, at least for those with digestive system symptoms.
Scotland has unfortunately had their first ever infections of Bluetongue virus in sheep and cattle, and I can see one of the affected farms from my window. At least 13 farms across Dumfries and Galloway now have confirmed cases.
The Bluetongue has arrived with midges that have been blown up from England, where it has been rapidly increasing for the past 3 years, spreading to Cumbria this week too. The whole UK is now affected, with a massive 684 UK farms confirmed to have at least 1 case since just 10th July, and a further 2,504 animals are under investigation.
By comparison there were 348 cases in the entire 2025-2026 season, and 163 in 2024-2025.
Prior to that between 10 November 2023 and 3 March 2024 Defra confirmed 126 cases, which were the first since a small outbreak in 2007-2008 that led to a Government-led vaccination campaign.
Bluetongue is not harmful to humans, but can be deadly or affect fertility and milk production in all ruminant animals (hooved, plant-eating, more than 1 stomach). There is a vaccine, and accompanying expense, and a rush is now on to try and supply vaccinations to farm animals in newly affected areas.
Sadly climate change and the warmer weather is great for the Bluetongue spreading midges, and regular mass vaccination may be the only way to beat this.
Meanwhile in America - New World Screwworm is now affecting animals at 37 premises in Texas since it returned on 3rd June after a carefully controlled break of 60 years. In Mexico, where it was eradicated in 2003 and breached the barrier in 2022, there have been over 36,000 animal cases and 500 human infections in the last 4 years.
Researchers just keep piling more COVID evidence on top of more evidence... Scientists from Maryland and University of Washington have studied your risk of developing allergies after COVID infection. We have seen before that it can increase, but this massive study of 271,332 people with COVID and 522,664 without, and a follow up of 18 months, is pretty clear reading.
Researchers found developing asthma was 1.54 (over 1 1/2) times as likely in the COVID group. For children it was particularly bad - 1.82. All 5 other allergic reactions studied were also more likely in the COVID group, and the difference was most notable in children:
Rhinoconjunctivitis (runny nose, sneezing, sore or weeping eyes) 1.25 (1.38 in children)
Food Allergies 1.11
Urticaria (nettle rash type skin rash) 1.1 (1.2 in children)
Drug Allergies 1.09 (1.24 in children)
Dermatitis (atopic eczema) 1.08 (1.15 in children)
The researchers suggest a link between COVID infection and 'Type 2' inflammation and immune responses, and suggest monitoring for allergies after COVID infection, to allow for early intervention and treatment.
The US CDC has a new, new, replacement new director. Hurrah. Bounding through the revolving door and already acknowledging the agency has problems is Dr Erica Schwartz - yes, you read that right, an actual Doctor. She has quite a career in medicine in the military and coast guard, with good experience in occupational and preventative medicine, work-life programs and flu pandemics. She did also spend 4 years working for United Healthcare (medical insurance), but hopefully that means she has real-world understanding. She says she is prepared to challenge her bosses when she believes they are wrong, but won't do so publicly.

6 employees of Frankfurt Airport in Germany have caught Malaria and horrifically 2 have died. 'Airport Malaria' is a rare occurrence and due to infected mosquitoes being accidentally imported within a plane or in luggage. Because the patient has not travelled and malaria isn’t an issue locally, it can be misdiagnosed.
Mosquito traps have been set up at the airport and local medical staff have been alerted to watch for unexplained fever in airport staff or travellers.
The US has its own 'COVID inquiry' with a 'House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic' already compiling a 520 page first report.
A couple of weeks ago a US Senate committee voted to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in 'contempt of Congress' because he invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to answer questions around 100 times during another hearing. This was the second time he'd been questioned over the same things, it was brutal and it really is divided by political affiliation, not genuine interest or beliefs. One side think he did well, the other side hate him. He was right or he was wrong, doesn't matter what he says and no-one actually seems to want to look at how the response can be improved next time.
Afterwards Fauci also refused to voluntarily testify before a second Senate panel, with his attorney explaining it would "impermissibly harass or degrade Dr. Fauci for political purposes."
Other leading scientists online are pointing out that next time the US has a pandemic, no-one is going to want to step forward to lead any response, because whatever they do, they'll be damned for it.
There's a great little research story in CIDRAP this month. When COVID arrived there was a genuine effort made to protect indigenous people from becoming exposed, but it was rarely successful. In the Bolivian Amazon it tore through the Tsimane and Moseten tribes, and local medical agencies scrambled to try and ready oxygen concentrators, however they weren't needed. The people got all the early symptoms, but even in the elderly, it didn’t often progress into the lungs and cause the 'cytokine storm' immune response that overwhelms the body. The death rate was staggeringly low, just 0.009% among the Tsimane and 0.095% among the Moseten - it was 23 times higher in the rest of the world. Researchers have been trying to find out why, and if it can help the rest of us.
There doesn't seem to be a magic answer, but these people are generally fit and active into old age, don't smoke, aren't overweight, and have a mainly vegetarian diet. They aren't exposed to allergens like we are, but are constantly exposed to parasites and pathogens and have a high white blood cell count. It may be that their bodies fight real threats all the time, while ours fight things we don't need to worry about, so their immune systems were simply better prepared when another real threat came along.
The first vaccine targeting the entire SARS virus family has begun clinical trials in Australia.
Designed for broad protection, it's hoped it'll work against SARS, COVID and other related coronaviruses, including future threats we don't even know exist yet.
Called GBP511, the CEPI-funded vaccine has been created by University of Washington researchers using a new 'nanoparticle platform', and is being manufactured by South Korean pharmaceutical company SK bioscience.

America switched from a live Shingles vaccine to the Shingrix Shingles vaccine in late 2017. Studies have already shown that getting the Shingrix Shingles vaccine instead of the older vaccine cuts your risk of developing dementia by 24% over the first 4 years and 20% over 7 years, and there is now clear and growing evidence from America that it also reduces your risk of 'a major cardiovascular event' by as much as 12%. Scientists from Oxford University are continuing to study this and hope to get robust figures for the UK - which switched to Shingrix 3 years ago.
The American study found over 7 years that adults over age 60 were 10% less likely to develop coronary heart disease and 12% less likely to develop heart failure if they'd been given Shingrix compared to the previous Shingles vaccine, and men had strokes later in life - a 12% increase in stroke-free time.

Dolly Parton has died aged 80. She was a great songwriter and singer, and a true philanthropist, who has helped millions of people with her money. In the 1990's Dolly gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school. She helped fund a new hospital, donated $1m to the children's hospital that treated her niece, and in 2022 donated $1 million towards paediatric infectious disease research. She built a bald eagle preserve. In 2016 she gave $1,000 a month for 6 months to families made homeless by the Tennessee fires, and in 2021 helped raise $700,000 for victims of Tennessee floods. At Christmas 2023 she gave $1 million to the US Salvation Army, and in 2024 she and her organisations gave $2 million to victims of Hurricane Helene. She funds tuition, fees and books for any Dollywood employee furthering their education. She co-funded development of the Moderna COVID vaccine when the world was panicking, and since 1995 her Imagination Library has given away over 332 million books to children under age 5 in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and Republic of Ireland.
She was a genuinely good person. She believed all humans are people, and no-one should judge anyone else, we should just let everyone be who they are. She was one of my heroes.
To add to the sense of loss, especially for anyone in their 40's, 50's or 60's, Tim Curry and Peter Cullen have also died. Among other things, Peter Cullen was the voice of Optimus Prime and Eeyore, where he taught us that you might look unassuming, but underneath you can be a mighty powerful beast, and that it's okay to be sad sometimes, your true friends will love you all the same. Tim Curry played many roles, but his most iconic is Frank-N-Furter, a sweet transvestite who gave teenage me a message I've carried for a lifetime and passed on to my children - "Don't Dream It, Be It".
Sorry today's news is so long, but I had a great 3 weeks off and spent time with 5 of our 6 offspring at a rented cottage in glamorous Preston. It was almost 10 degrees warmer there than last year when we went to Italy, so we definitely chose the correct week to take a break. My commiserations to anyone down South who had to work in the stifling temperatures, and to those who now face floods and thunderstorms. I hope you remembered to treat yourselves kindly while I was away, and that you'll do so again this weekend. It breaks up the everyday and gives you something to look forward to - you've earnt it, and you deserve it.
