COVID-19, Coronavirus, H5N1 Avian Flu, Measles, Vaccination and Other Virus and Health UK and World News Update 6th February 2026
On 30th January it was 6 years since WHO declared the novel coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
What a rollercoaster it's been.
Good news from UK viruswatch. Flu, COVID and RSV are all at low levels.
There always has to be one that ruins it, and Norovirus is still at high levels, especially among people aged 65 and over.
In the USA flu is also dropping, although there are a couple of areas still suffering. COVID levels are pretty low across the USA and also Europe... so relax (but not too much)...
From 1 April 2026, the UK NHS will extend eligibility for RSV vaccination to people aged 80 years and over and all residents of older adult care homes, regardless of age.
Resident doctors in England have voted to continue striking over pay and conditions for the next 6 months. They were promised pay would keep rising until it was comparable to pay in 2008, but have now been offered a 2.5% pay rise this year (annual inflation was estimated at 3.4% in December, so 2.5% is effectively a cut). The fact that each year 30,000 3rd year resident doctors apply for just 10,000 training places has also not been properly addressed, even though the UK NHS is desperately short of doctors.
Scottish ministers seem to have avoided a first Scottish strike by Resident Doctors, by offering a 4.25% pay rise this year and 3.75% next year, as well as a move up the pay scale for 2 years - meaning real wage increases will be over 9%, with pay at £34,500 to £37,345 for a newly qualified doctor in 2026/27.
Frankly, under £40k is a very fair price to pay for someone working long unsocial hours actually saving lives and wellbeing. Each GP in England now has a staggering average of 2,228 patients (May 2025), so it is just £18 per year per patient, or £1.50 a month. (10 years ago each GP had an average 1,938 patients.)
"Countering Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the World Health Organization, California is the first American state to join the WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network.
With WHOGOARN, we’ll keep working to help protect Californians from public health threats."
Gavin Newsom, California Governor.
The USA officially parted ways with the World Health Organisation on 22nd January, and the very next day Gavin announced that California have made their own plans. New York City was the second area to join, and on Wednesday Illinois became the 2nd US state to sign up.
WHOGOARN is a "global network of partners dedicated to advancing emergency health preparedness and response". It has over 360 members including universities, Government agencies, health departments, health providers etc, and was founded in 2020 as a response to COVID. It is an early warning system, an information sharing hub and a fountain of knowledge, and provides health resources and emergency response teams and equipment around the globe.
In their official statement and comments about leaving WHO, Head of Health and Human Services RFK Jr and Secretary Rubio said a few erm... lies. WHO were quick to fact-check and correct them.
"While WHO recommended the use of masks, physical distancing and vaccines, WHO did not recommend governments to mandate the use of masks or vaccines and never recommended lockdowns.
WHO supported sovereign governments with technical advice and guidance that was developed on the basis of evolving evidence on COVID19 for them to make policy decisions in the best interests of their citizens. Each government made their own decisions, based on their needs and circumstances."
Dr Tedros
"I know firsthand as COVID19 technical lead: WHO detected the Wuhan, China signal on 31 Dec 2019. Taiwan didn't warn us: they asked for information the same day. We have not ignored Taiwan, we don't ignore science and WHO never recommended lockdowns."
Maria Van Kerkhove
It's true. You can look back and see for yourself - I was reporting it at the time.
Nipah Virus has made all the headlines over the past 2 weeks, which is unusual and hopefully overkill, but a good scare story can deflect attention from other things.
Two 25 year old healthcare workers in West Bengal, India, were confirmed to have Nipah, which caused a flurry of panic and several Asian countries stepped up border screening. 196 potential contacts have been traced, isolated and tested - and all have returned negative results so far. Indian officials have declared the outbreak 'contained', but not yet 'over', as Nipah virus has been known to have an incubation period of well over 3 weeks, so cases could still be out there.
Nipah is a disease transmitted from animals including fruit bats and pigs. It has no treatment or cure, and the fatality rate in humans is 40-75%. It is thankfully quite a tricky one to pass person to person, usually via body fluids, so carers and healthcare workers are at highest risk.
At last report one of the patients is recovering and one remains in critical condition. People rarely fully recover from Nipah to full health.
Bangladeshi scientists have discovered that 5 people initially thought to have Nipah Virus in December 2022 and Spring 2023 actually had Pteropine Orthovirus (PRV). Both diseases are spread by bats, both can cause acute respiratory illness and encephalitis, and both can obviously kill.
All of the patients had eaten raw date palm sap, which can be contaminated with bat faeces. They lived nowhere near each other, and although their disease was very similar genetically, it was from different branches of the family tree. PRV, like flu, is made of jigsaw pieces which can come apart and recombine, and the assumption is that there were 5 different times recombinations infected these people independently.
A study of almost half a million US children and young people aged under 21 found the risk of Long COVID was around 903.7 per million after first infection, and rose to 1,883.7 per million 6 months after reinfection - so basically children and young people are just as likely to be left with Long COVID each amd every time they catch COVID. All the people who wanted everyone to catch it and become 'immune' were wasting their breath. It does NOT happen, and we are not looking after our young people.
We know that immunisation reduces your chance of Long COVID - it really is long past time we stopped deciding who deserves a COVID vaccination by their likelihood of death, and started taking into account their likelihood of long term harm.
A broad spectrum coronavirus vaccine, GBP511, has begun clinical testing in Australia. This is a project by University of Washington Medicine and South Korean pharmaceutical company SK bioscience, funded by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations).
The vaccine is designed to protect against COVID-19 as well as related coronaviruses, so it'll protect against some which have pandemic potential, but haven’t yet infected humans - including potentially coronaviruses we don't even know exist right now.
It's a really high tech vaccine, because it uses a computer-designed protein particle that doesn't exist in nature, with 4 attached "receptor-binding domains (RBDs) from different coronaviruses" (bits that viruses attach to). 2 are from SARS-CoV-2 (COVID), 1 from SARS-CoV-1 (SARS), and 1 from a bat coronavirus (BtKY72).
In animal trials it was found to be safe and effective, protecting animals from related viruses they hadn't been specifically immunised against.
The same technology is also being used for a broad spectrum flu vaccine, FluMos-v2, which is undergoing clinical human trials at the moment.
Several studies have found that taking the Diabetes drug Metformin may reduce the risk of developing Long COVID. A review by University of Minnesota Medical School has looked at all of the evidence and concluded the risk reduction is substantial - 40%-60%. The Metformin has to be taken while the patient has COVID, and sadly it isn't a cure for people who already have Long COVID, but the results were similar in all groups of adults who participated in the trials.
It isn't yet an approved treatment, so you are unlikely to be able to get your doctor to prescribe it for you, but hopefully the increasing evidence here will be taken seriously.
A newly released study of people in British Columbia suggests that pre-existing immunity to H5N1 bird flu varies by age and what you have been exposed to in the past. This isn’t entirely unexpected, it's pretty normal.
The researchers tested blood samples from 575 people aged 1 to 80+, and it's refreshingly good news overall. 70% of participants had detectable antibodies which will work against H5N1. 45% at a moderate level, 32% slightly higher, and 17% had a high concentration. This could come in very handy.
Two groups of people specifically had a high concentration of antibodies which can fight H5N1. Adults born before 1947, who were probably exposed to early H1N1 flu, and people who were born between 1997 and 2003, so they were at school during the 2009 H1N1 'swine flu' pandemic.
H5N1 Avian Flu has struck a dairy farm in Friesland in The Netherlands. A cat became sick and died, prompting testing, which proved positive for H5N1. Cows and milk were tested and environmental samples were taken. Milk from one cow showed antibodies and 5 others were inconclusive, so they were retested. The retesting showed all 5 additional cows had antibodies, meaning they have previously been exposed to H5N1, but no longer actively have the virus. This is the first time any cows have been proven to have been infected with H5N1 outside the USA.
We can't really be surprised by this, but it’s incredibly unwelcome.
Ministers report that the only first cow to test positive had been ill, so its milk was withheld from sale, but infected milk from the other cows is highly likely to have entered the food chain. Fortunately all milk from this farm is pasteurised, which kills H5N1, so no risk to the public is assumed.
H5N1 avian/bird flu is still going strong across the Northern hemisphere. There are no other reports of dairy herds infected, but news reports are coming in thick and fast from all over, so it became a bit impossible to try and pick out which to cover. It's not a great picture across Europe, Asia or America.
In the last 30 days the US has confirmed another 56 flocks infected (38 backyard and 18 commercial).
The UK picture has calmed down a bit, with just one reported infection in the last 2 weeks, a small poultry flock near Needham Market, Suffolk. Totals for the UK this season (since October 2025) stand at:
England: 73
Scotland: 8
Wales: 7
Northern Ireland: 4
Total: 92
The UK lost its measles-free status in 2018, regained it in 2021, and in 2024 cases went up and up to 2,911. So we join Canada and have lost measles-free status again. The US will likely follow in April with their next WHO review. Also losing measles-free status this January are Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Spain and Uzbekistan. The good news for the UK at least is that from January 2025 up to 12th January 2026 there were 957 confirmed cases. This is less than 1/3 of the lab-confirmed cases we had in 2024, so it's a massive improvement.
A disease with a vaccine that is around 97% permanently effective at preventing cases, and we let it run amok. Well done to the anti-vaxxers. The deaths and permanent disabilities are on you.
As a reminder, in the wealthier world measles kills around 1 in every 5,000 of those who catch it, but 1 in every 5 will be hospitalised with severe illness, which can include gastro-intestinal illness, hearing loss, brain damage, blindness, pneumonia etc. Measles also causes birth defects, prematurity and low birthweight.
Although your body makes permanent measles immunity from infection, it destroys some of the other immunity you had, leaving you vulnerable to diseases you had already fought off. This does not happen when your body is familiarised with dead virus via vaccination.
In the US the South Carolina measles outbreak is frankly staggering. In just 16 weeks, since October 2025 to the 3rd February 2026, this outbreak total is 876 cases (over 700 since the beginning of this year) - more than the Texas outbreak for the whole of last year. As of 31st January 19 adults and children were hospitalised and 440 unvaccinated potential contacts had been told to isolate at home for up to 21 days. There are several unconfirmed reports of multiple children hospitalised with encephalitis - brain swelling. This is generally known to affect an average of 1 in every 1,000 people with measles.
The US CDC page hasn't been updated yet this week, but as of 29th January, 588 confirmed measles cases had been reported in 2026.
There are 2 measles outbreaks at US ICE detention facilities - 1 in Arizona and 1 in Dilley, Texas. 2 cases have been confirmed in Dilley, and according to reports movement within the facility has been halted and all known contacts isolated. The facility has a capacity for potentially 2,400 detainees, and media say there are currently around 1,200 people there, including 400 children.
Canada may be getting a rein on their measles outbreak because it's been worse. Data only runs up to 24th January, with 94 measles cases (89 confirmed, 5 probable) during 2026 at that point.
Mexico has been struggling with measles since at least the beginning of last year, and it's not getting any better. The state of Jalisco is now at the epicentre and has issued a health alert and mandated face masks in schools. This is concerning globally as Jalisco is due to host football World Cup games this Summer.
Mexico has reported 1,981 confirmed cases already this year - with 1,163 of those in Jalisco, which also has 2,092 suspected cases.
It seems in no doubt really, US Head of Health and Human Services RFK Jr has been put in office to try and kill off unwanted young people. There can be literally no other explanation for why he would describe the HPV vaccination as "the worst" and "insanely dangerous". It has reduced HPV infections in the cohort given it as teenagers by at least 85%, some studies found as much as 97%. It has reduced the number of young people found to have pre-cancerous cells by a minimum finding of 40% (some studies substantially higher). It genuinely gives this generation the opportunity to eradicate cervical cancer. Deterring people from getting the jab is quite nasty. RFK claims neurotoxins in the jab are causing 37 times the death rate as there is for cervical cancer. Christ on a bike. Really, where are these dead people then RFK? Show us some evidence, because no-one else can find anything to support what you are saying...
The US administration have told GAVI (the Global Vaccines Initiative) that they need to phase out using the preservative Thimerosal or they'll stop funding. Presumably related to this, RFK Jr has said that WHO and GAVI have been "injecting mercury into more than a hundred million babies" every year.
I'm so bored of him and his tedious lies now. We've covered mercury in vaccines many times and spoiler, it's mercury salt, which is much safer and in far lower quantities than the mercury in a tuna sandwich. Thimerosal is a preservative which allows for multi-use vials, room temperature storage, and makes vaccines much more stable and cheap, and it has never been shown to cause any harm.
By the way, RFK Jr is vaccinated, and so are his kids. It’s just other people's kids he thinks should be left to die from preventable diseases.
Not content with just rubbishing vaccines, RFK Jr has now said that a keto diet can cure Schizophrenia - please let me remind you he is not a medical doctor and has never studied medicine. He's misquoting, commenting on tiny studies of 21 and 2 (yes, that's two) people and upsetting actual medics who specialise in mental health the world over.
The doctor who led the study RFK Jr is talking about has clarified: "ketogenic therapies may also benefit some individuals with serious mental illnesses"... "sometimes resulting in sustained remission of symptoms. I personally do not describe this as a “cure”; the word "remission" is fine with me."
If you are physically well and wish to try a keto diet, consult with your doctor and crack on, and I hope it helps, but for the love of God please do not stop taking any medicines prescribed to you by a medical doctor because a man qualified in law and art history suggested that would be okay. Your health and wellbeing deserves cautious care and attention, not quackery.
The new head of RFK Jr's vaccine advisory panel is obviously feeling left out what with not being consulted before RFK makes changes to US vaccine schedules, so he's making his new boss proud by suggesting that we don't need Polio and other vaccines any more, so they should be 'optional'. Well, newsflash, they already are optional - which is why US states (and other countries) are seeing a resurgence in childhood illnesses. Parents have control over what vaccines their children have. Some believe science, some believe a random person on Facebook who uses 3 exclamation marks and talks about how 'some child you've never met' got ill just after a vaccination so therefore they're not worth having, because measles and whooping cough are so fun.
We eradicated Smallpox, and that was the only thing we didn't need a vaccine for any more - until mpox came along and then it proved incredibly handy. Much as it would be great to have eradicated polio, we haven't quite - there were 379 confirmed cases worldwide in 2024. Cases regularly appear in Afghanistan, Pakistan and some African countries, and travellers move it around the globe. In early 2022 wastewater testing in the UK identified sustained transmission in London. Local children were offered a polio booster and by the November it was no longer present. 5 European countries detected related polio in wastewater in late 2024 - Spain, Poland, Germany, the UK and Finland. It was last detected in German wastewater in November 2025. Polio can't replicate without a human, but it can survive for a long time outside a body. It's spread via faeces, and poo-contaminated water is a big culprit. In damp cool conditions it can easily survive for 3 months or longer. But it can't paralyse 99% - 100% of people vaccinated against it.
We've known for a long time that catching COVID can affect your brain. Brain fog, sleep problems, dementia, loss of taste and smell. Imaging of the brain can show damage in some people. A UK study estimated COVID infection causes the equivalent average of a 3 point drop in I.Q., higher if you have persistent symptoms (Long COVID) and rising to a 9 point average I.Q. drop in people who were admitted to intensive care.
Ziyad Al-Aly, Clinical Epidemiologist, VA St Louis, has been doing the maths. He estimates that COVID may already have increased the number of US adults with an IQ of less than 70 from 4.7 million to 7.5 million. People with an IQ below 70 generally have "a level of cognitive impairment that requires significant societal support".
I'd wager they are also more likely to believe utter garbage they see shared on social media, or be willing to believe things that don't match what they can see with their own eyes 'because a Government official said so'. So yeah, that helps answer some of the questions we've all been asking recently...
There was a fascinating discussion the other day on Reddit where people were asking why bats have so many diseases and are so dangerous to humans.
The reasons are many, but if you start with the knowledge they are a flying mammal (the only flying mammal) which lives in huge colonies and create massive mounds of faeces in their home, you begin to see the issue. It's an ever-strengthening battle between viruses and immunity, only the best survive, and a lot of those pathogens can infect other mammals. There are over 1,500 different bat species, some of them live to be 30 or 40 years old, some can fly at 100mph and no-one really knows how many bats there are, because they are too hard to count, but the biggest known colony is nesr San Antonio, Texas, USA, and numbers 15 MILLION members.
Not a virus, but incredible health news nonetheless. A team of Spanish researchers have cured pancreatic cancer in rats. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most quick and deadly cancers, and this is the first time anyone has offered any cure in mammals. Even better, the cocktail of drugs they cured it with is low toxicity with minimal side effects - gemcitabine, ATRA, and neratinib. Each has a role to play to block the cancer from 3 different directions at once.
Even better than that, no relapses were observed in periods of over 200 days, and there was no development of resistance to the drugs.
The lead for the team, Mariano Barbacid, has been working on this since 1982 when he personally discovered Oncogenes (mutated genes with the potential to cause cancer) - molecular oncology really is HIS field.
Humans are not rats, and we are still a long way from a solution for people, it isn’t even ready for human trials yet, but this is a giant leap, and it carries a lot of hope.
Some more good news. Ethiopia has declared its first recorded Marburg outbreak is over, as it has been 42 days without any new cases.
In total there were 14 confirmed cases and sadly 9 deaths.
They worked darn hard to contain this incredibly rapidly, so health officials and healthcare workers on the ground deserve massive credit. I sincerely doubt an outbreak in the UK could ever hope to have so few people infected.
Before I go two UK product recalls which may be relevant:
Cleansing Wipes - they have been withdrawn from sale but may be in your first aid kits: These four products should not be used under any circumstances:
ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free
Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes (testing revealed contamination with a Burkholderia strain not related to the outbreak cases)
Baby and infant formula - Danone is recalling several Aptamil and Cow & Gate First Infant Milk and Follow on Milk formula products because cereulide toxin may be present in some batches of the products. If you have bought any of the affected products do not feed them to babies. Instead, return them to the shop where you bought them for a full refund with or without a receipt. The affected batch numbers and dates are shown here - https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/alert/fsa-prin-05-2026
It's the weekend! We've all got rotten colds so we have a couple of movies and an easy weekend lined up. I hope you've got something to spoil yourself too - you've earned it. It's been a long 6 years and the main world news right now is darker than I think any of us could have anticipated. There are good things happening too, focus on those and if you look past the wind and rain, you'll see the first signs of Spring creeping through. The world keeps turning, and it's brightening up out there. I'll be back in 2 weeks...
Keep Warm, Get Some Fresh Air, Save The NHS...
