COVID-19, Measles, H5N1 Avian Flu, Vaccinations and Other Virus and Health UK and World News Update 20th February 2026
The COVID, flu and RSV Winter season appears to be over, low figures in the UK (and dropping in the US) ... ahhhh. Norovirus activity remains high but has stabilised. Total UK norovirus reports "between weeks 5 and 6 of 2026 were 45.9% higher than the 5-season average for the same 2-week period". Yowch. Wash your hands regularly people.
The latest NHS stats released last week are a mixed bag. That's me being polite. They're appalling, but what do you expect from something that's been starved of cash and investment for so long. Summed up by the BBC's Hugh Pym:
"Planned treatment waiting list in England has dropped to 7.29 million lowest in nearly three years. But A&E waits of more than 12 hours after decision to admit at record high, 71,500 in Jan."
We are plodding through the backlog, but very slowly, and possibly at the expense of other areas... Why have we never actually addressed getting well people home with support?

The National Pharmacy Association has delivered a letter representing around 1/3 of English pharmacies, warning Wes Streeting they'll have to make cuts to services or risk closing entirely if they don't receive a significant increase in Government funding.
Pharmacies are being asked to provide an ever-increasing array of services to reduce pressure on A&E and GP surgeries, and as part of the 10 year plan are expected to offer more care in the community. In April there will be business rate rises and minimum wage increases. 65% of pharmacies in England operated at a loss in 2025, so expecting more without a significant increase in funding is not going to work.
The UK Health Security Agency has published their first Cold Mortality Monitoring Report, which looked at deaths over Winter 2024-2025.
It's estimated that 3 periods of intense cold caused 2,544 people to die. 421 in November 2024, 493 in a short cold snap in early January 2025, and 1,630 during a 6 day period of cold weather also in early January.
1,448 of the deaths can be directly related to the cold, while the others were a mix of cold and illnesses like flu. Over the past 5 years there has been a steep rise in the number of people dying from cold temperatures, and this is attributed to "an ageing population, fuel poverty increasing exposure to cold indoor environments, and the longer-term health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic reducing our collective resilience".
It is 2026, the UK is one of the richest nations on Earth, and this is one of the saddest things I've ever typed up. It shouldn't be like this.
As a reminder, for healthy people aged 1-64, your living room or office should generally be at least 18-21º and your bedroom 16-18º (for babies 16-20º). Lower temperatures increase your risk of high blood pressure, blood clots, strokes and heart attacks, pneumonia and bronchitis. Below 14º risks hypothermia, confusion and impaired immune system. Below 12º blood vessels contract causing high blood pressure and your blood thickens, giving you a much higher risk of stroke or heart attack. No-one should be sleeping for long in a space as cold as that, especially if you are over 65 or otherwise vulnerable.
Wes Streeting has announced 1.4 million NHS healthcare workers (including nurses, paramedics, midwives and hospital porters etc) in England, Wales and N. Ireland will be given a 3.3% pay rise in April.
This would be great if inflation hadn't been 4.2% in December, meaning yet another pay rise that leaves you worse off than you were last year. Wes says it's a real pay rise, because estimates suggest next year inflation might be 2.2%. It's not next year yet Wes.
GMB union are not happy, and I think I can spot why...

Softening the blow for nurses, Wes Streeting has also announced that Graduate Nurses will have pay rates increased, all Band 5 nurses in England (44% of NHS nurses) will have their roles and pay bands reviewed, and there'll be a National Nursing Preceptorship for graduate nurses (a support programme for newly qualified nurses).
Most general practice nurses (GPNs) will not automatically benefit from these 'Agenda For Change' measures, so unions are working to ensure they are included.
Not virus-related, but very bad news for anyone waiting for a hip or knee replacement - especially if you are elderly or have had a traumatic injury. Specialist cement is often needed to fix replacement joints in place, and most of it comes from a company called Haerus. They have had a "critical machine failure" at their Germany site and production has halted until it's fixed, which could take 2 months. The UK NHS are almost out of cement, so will prioritise the most urgent cases, but thousands of operations will inevitably be delayed. You have my sincere sympathy.
"After pulling out of WHO, the Trump administration is proposing spending $2 billion a year to replicate the global disease surveillance and outbreak functions the United States once helped build, which will cost about three times as much."
The Washington Post there, not even attempting to hide how completely gobsmacked they are by the idea. Spectacular.
Someone in the US Department of Health and Human Services has realised that monitoring global outbreaks is important. The US officially left WHO a few weeks ago because it was apparently a waste of money at $680 a year (they haven’t paid their bill since 2023). I dunno, but spending 3 times as much on a global tracking system which is entirely American seems like it may not be as handy and is giving 'World Series' vibes, but hey, you do you.
50p for anyone who guesses correctly how much he'll charge for other countries to join in, and which countries will take up that offer.

The UK has a measles problem, and it's expected to get worse, because measles has an incubation period of up to 3 weeks.
Between 1st Jan and 16th Feb 130 measles cases had been confirmed in England, 88 in London (50 in Enfield, 10 in Haringey) and 28 in the West Midlands (23 in Birmingham).
Outbreaks have been confirmed at 7 schools and nurseries across Enfield and Haringey. A local GP surgery is quoted by the BBC as saying 1 in 5 patients have been admitted to hospital - none of them have been fully immunised.
Immunisation rates in London (and Birmingham) are among the lowest in the UK (around 80% in Enfield) and local health bodies are in a race to try and prevent it becoming established. Parents have been sent letters warning that if their unvaccinated children are identified as contacts, it may be necessary for them to stay at home for 3 weeks to ensure they are not contagious.
In 2025, there were 959 laboratory confirmed measles cases in England. In 2024, this was 2,911, which was the highest number of cases recorded annually since 2012.
Measles in the US is also doing staggeringly well for a disease we'd almost eradicated and have a 97-99% effective vaccination for...
(Thanks to CIDRAP for the local figures because UK viewers aren't allowed to access them at present.)
Utah has an outbreak which now numbers over 300 cases, 58 in the past 3 weeks (255 unvaccinated). North Carolina has had at least 22 cases since December.
Florida has an outbreak of 68 cases since the beginning of January, at least 57 related to Ave Maria University.
Heading the table still is South Carolina, with 962 cases reported between October and 17th February. Only 26 are known to be fully vaccinated, and at least 20 people have been admitted to hospital, while others have needed outpatient care.
US CDC confirmed figures to 12th February show 910 cases, 30 hospitalised, 94% not fully vaccinated.
Canada's measles picture is so far looking better than last year (5,451 cases total, 30 children needed intensive care, 2 infants died), but still ongoing. In the week to 7th February they reported 57 cases, with a total for 2026 of 192 so far (179 confirmed, 13 probable). Of those 74 are in Manitoba, where an outbreak already lasting almost a year has so far totalled around 400 cases.
Measles cases across the Americas have been rising for at least a year, but in the first 3 weeks of 2026 a massive 40 TIMES as many cases were reported as the same period last year. Suffering the most is Mexico, which is having a nightmare. 2,755 new cases have already been reported this year, with over half in Jalisco. Schools have mandated mask-wearing, and visitors for World Cup matches this Summer are being warned to ensure they have been vaccinated.
It isn't just Europe and the Americas where measles is making a comeback. It is a world issue. Even Australia is now reporting locally-acquired cases, and a total of 37 cases so far this year. In 2025 they reported 177 cases in total.
The NHS are warning that some people are overdoing vitamin D. It's had a great reputation lately because having healthy levels helps you fight off COVID (and other nasties). It's impossible to overdose on vitamin D from sunlight, which is where we get it naturally, but if you are taking a supplement long term, make sure it isn’t too much, and ensure you aren't doubling up by also taking a multivitamin with vitamin D.
The UK NHS recommend no more than 10mcg per day supplement for anyone aged over 12 months, unless you have a specific medical condition and have discussed it with your doctor.

Just in case anyone was in any doubt, yet another study has found no link between COVID vaccines and autism.
434 children were checked between ages 18 and 30 months, using 4 standard screening tests. Half had been born to mothers who were mRNA COVID vaccinated during or within 30 days of the pregnancy.
There were no differences in results between the 2 groups using any of the 4 screening tests.
Long COVID research is coming in thick and fast at the moment, and the thing it all has in common is that Long COVID can be seen and measured, it is a real condition caused by changes and damage to the body - in the brain, the heart, the lungs, the kidneys, the blood, the immune system etc.
In the last fortnight:
- A very small Japanese study of 20 people has found abnormal increases in AMPA receptors (AMPARs - essential for learning and memory), in people suffering from Long COVID. A biological reason for 'brain fog' and other cognitive symptoms. The level of increase closely matched the severity of symptoms, and they were able to almost perfectly identify people with Long COVID against healthy individuals purely by looking at the high tech [11C]K-2 PET imagery. It is possible to suppress AMPAR activity using drugs.
- Researchers from NYU Langone Health have found that in some cases Long COVID patients show choroid plexus (ChP) enlargement and reduced cerebral (brain) blood flow. (The choroid plexus is where cerebrospinal fluid is made - the fluid which cushions your brain and spinal cord from injuries, removes waste and transports nutrients.)
ChP alterations are associated with Alzheimer's disease‐related symptoms. They can be seen on magnetic resonance imaging, so may serve for tracking neurological symptoms in Long COVID patients.
- Researchers studying COVID-induced post-exertional malaise (being completely exhausted after doing anything) have concluded attempting to 'get fitter' to solve it with gradually increasing exercise may often only make it worse. Heart issues in long COVID are due to real damage: myocardial scarring, inflammation, "leaky" blood vessels, heart doesn't fill properly, mitochondrial dysfunction, endothelial problems, autoimmunity, and poor oxygen use in muscles. Patients need individualised management, potentially including drugs to reduce symptoms, to avoid relapses or worsening of symptoms.
I've been reporting that even mild COVID can cause potentially permanent damage for almost 6 years. Way back in early 2020 we saw divers with lung damage, even after mild COVID.
- A 2022 study of people with loss of smell or taste concluded "SARS-CoV-2 can cause inflammation and viral invasion of the olfactory bulb, initiating a cascade of degeneration similar to Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body disease. People who have had even mild cases of COVID-19 show signs of degeneration in cortical areas connected with the olfactory system. These data suggest a wave of post-COVID dementia in the coming decades."
- Last Autumn a study found 20 times as many microclots in the blood of Long COVID patients, and they trapped other particles, making them stickier and harder for the body to break down. The machine which counted the microclots was able to diagnose 91% of Long COVID patients just from this data.
- There has been constant and consistent data showing COVID causes myocarditis (heart inflammation), as well as POTS, arrhythmias and other heart disorders in people of all ages, including our children. Back in 2020 we already knew around 1 in every 7 infected people admitted to hospital had myocarditis.
Demoralising as this all seems, each new discovery or piece of solid evidence is a part of the jigsaw puzzle which we are already putting together. It gives scientists and researchers another chance to look for treatments and therapies that may not have been considered or given credibility before. Never lose hope.
A new review study from Department of Reproductive Medical Centre at Sichuan University, China, has found COVID vaccinations do NOT affect fertility. It isn't all good news though, because they also studied COVID infection.
While women's fertility appears unaffected, for at least 90 days after having COVID men's fertility showed a negative effect. They conclude that SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to "reductions in sperm quality, count, and motility".
The authors say evidence was not great quality, so this needs to be examined more, and for longer periods of time, in order to fully assess what the heck is happening.

Another plus for COVID vaccinations. British Columbia Centre for Disease Control studied data from over 2 million adults and found that if you are NOT vaccinated against COVID and it makes you severely ill, your risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes may be increased by around 18% for up to 3 years after infection. Risk for COVID vaccinated people and people who only had mild COVID was the same as people who didn’t catch COVID.
Well if I didn't have to rewrite this one 3 times... Last week we had a disaster for mRNA technology, and this is why I've reported so heavily on RFK Jr and his team. The USA did not not play fair, and this will affect vaccines (at the very least) in future.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) unexpectedly refused to review Moderna's new mRNA flu vaccine for approval. RFK Jr’s hand-chosen FDA lead director, Mr Vinay Prasad, made the decision all by himself, ignoring his staff. He said it was because 'Moderna didn’t compare their vaccine to the very best high dose flu jab for high risk individuals', however they had, as agreed with the FDA, compared it to the standard flu jab - Fluarix Quadrivalent from GlaxoSmithKline. Moderna spent several years and over $750M on this, including a 41,000 person study which showed their jab was safe and more effective than Fluarix.
3 days later Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said they wouldn't be investing in any new late-stage vaccine trials now. Promising vaccines for Epstein-Barr virus, herpes and shingles etc, all halted. This was followed by suggestions other vaccine companies were also twitchy about investing time and money on something that might be turned down without warning, and considering pulling out of the US market.
Less than a week later the FDA changed their mind and WILL review the new flu jab for approval.
What an absolute mess. This isn't a playground, these are the biggest companies in the world and people's lives.
Messenger RNA technology can create and adapt vaccines for new strains of virus really quickly (making it especially ideal for any newly emerging pandemic), and it's use is being examined far more widely, including really specific and specialist vaccines and treatments for other virus, rare conditions and cancers. The US has already cancelled around $1 billion in planned mRNA bird flu vaccinations and research. If mRNA can't find reliable support and funding in the US then we should all hope it finds it elsewhere. Probably time for Europe or Asia to step up.
This news has upset a heck of a lot of people. Heard Island is home to rare species which are now under threat, including 2 species of birds unique to the island - the Heard Island Cormorant and Heard Island Sheathbill - it is only a few island steps the Australian mainland, which is currently still H5N1-free.
While we are on H5N1, latest stats show Winter is not quite over yet, but detections are slowing down. The US has reported another 51 flocks infected in the last 30 days (23 commercial, 28 backyard), but no new cattle herds infected. The UK has reported just 2 newly infected flocks in the last 14 days, in Northumberland, England and a 7th flock near Penicuik, Midlothian in the Scottish Borders.
The US is restructuring the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Jay Bhattacharya says they will be updating by removing the emphasis on future threats and focussing on what's affecting health currently.
It's being widely reported that this will reduce spending on pandemic preparedness, and emerging infectious diseases and biodefence (which currently take up around 1/3 of the $6.6 BILLION budget). Pah, who needs them anyway, right?
NIAID has an acting director, Jeffery Taubenberger, because Trump fired the previous director Jeanne Marrazzo, who took over from Anthony Fauci, who had been there for 38 years.
The US "CDC has had a full-time director for less than a month in Trump 2.0. People watching the situation think it's unlikely there will be another Senate-confirmed CDC director in this term.
With Jim O'Neill's firing, it doesn't have an acting director either".
Helen Branswell, Editor, STAT News
Bizarrely, after hand-picking his own expectedly compliant Health and Human Services staff, RFK Jr isn’t going to retain them. "Restructuring" means HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill and General Counsel Mike Stuart are out. Bye then.
Stop the press! Barely moments later and it appears there is room for a US CDC Acting Director after all, and it's... National Institutes of Health (NIH) head Jay Bhattacharya. Okaaay...
I guess now he has 2 very important US health jobs and it'll save time for everyone if they want to get advice or policy decisions from both the NIH and the CDC. Begone conflicting or second opinions, hello single point of failure!
(How can this even be allowed?)

RFK Jr also made the news this week by saying more people died in the Pfizer COVID vaccine trial if they were given the vaccine than if they weren't. What he didn't mention is that the early trial he was talking about had 15 deaths in the vaccine group and 14 in the non-vaccine group, which any fool can see is irrelevant, especially when you have 21,700 participants in each group and none of the deaths were vaccine-related.
When you look at data since the vaccine was approved, unvaccinated people have a higher rate of all-cause mortality (around 23% higher), including from complications of COVID, because they have been conned and believe guff like this, and didn’t take the opportunity to protect themselves.
There is a steep rise in the number of cases of mpox being detected and confirmed in the UK, and even the World Health Organisation are telling us not to be complacent. 56 Clade II and 2 Clade I cases reported in January alone. Don't be silly chaps - get vaccinated.
Most worrying worldwide is the recombinant Clade I AND Clade II mix. It has been detected both in the UK and in India and appears to have evolved from the same route, but the 2 cases have no known link and both patients had also recently travelled to completely different parts of the world, so we aren't sure exactly what is going on out there - and how many people globally might now be infected with this Clade I/II strain.
An elderly Warwickshire gentleman has sadly died after testing positive for a type of bacteria called Non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae. This gives a positive Cholera result, but does not cause the cholera disease which kills over 140,000 people globally each year. He did however have a severe stomach upset and other symptoms common to Cholera.
Cholera is a bacteria spread through contaminated water and before sanitation, sewerage and fresh water methods were improved was a common cause of death in the UK. The last recorded case of Cholera caught in the UK was in 1901, so authorities are unsure if this was a false positive. Hopefully there will be more to this story...
Trump Of The Week:
“President Trump doesn’t care about vested interests and he doesn’t care about offending powerful people.”
“It’s a joy to work for him because he lets me do stuff that I don’t think anybody else would ever let me do.”
RFK Jr, US head of Health and Human Services.

6 years ago when the COVID vaccines were being developed, it was known some people would be injured by them. If you give 60 million people anything at all, be it a chocolate biscuit, a glass of lager, a smear of face cream or literally anything, some will have a bad reaction. If you vaccinate enough people, some will become ill or even die while still sitting in the chair. Despite negative and vocal press, COVID vaccinations have proven incredibly safe. According to data obtained by the BBC, up until mid-November last year, almost 5 years after launch, the UK had authorised just 249 payouts for harm caused by Covid vaccinations. I am very sorry, and very grateful to every single one of those people and their families. Within 2 years of launch, in December 2022, COVID vaccinations were already estimated to have saved at least 112,000 lives in the UK alone.
An NHS doctor from East Kilbride has been struck off for stealing and selling £8,000 of PPE back in 2020. Dr Sheikh and her husband were both given 10 month prison sentences last year for the theft.
Rightly so.
Obviously their biggest error was not being as posh as Baroness Michelle Mone and her husband. She is still a Baroness in the House of Lords, and they're living it up on a yacht somewhere fancy, despite owing the UK Government £122 MILLION for faulty gowns and HMRC £39 MILLION in unpaid tax.
Some doubly good news, particularly for the world's poorest populations. There have been so many cholera outbreaks over the past 5 years that the World Health Organisation stockpile of vaccines was emptied, and they were unable to offer protective vaccinations for 3 years. The situation has finally improved, and EUBiologics has stepped in to provide more vaccines, so WHO can resume immunisations in at risk populations. Mozambique, Bangladesh and DRC are the first on the list.
Between 1st January and 28th September 2025, 518,324 cholera cases and 6,508 deaths were reported across 32 countries. Cholera is usually spread via contaminated water, so education, and access to safe water and sanitation are vital tools for prevention.
Sometimes you are reminded just how rich you are.

A team at Stanford Medicine in the US has successfully protected mice against a range of conditions using a single vaccine - coronaviruses (including COVID), Staph (which can cause sepsis), Acinetobacter baumannii (which can cause infections) and house dust mites.
The vaccine can be given as a nasal spray and causes the white blood cells in the lungs to basically get ready for battle, and stay primed for several months.
It's a few years away from being useful to humans, but has a lot of potential and is more evidence that delivering vaccines directly to the spot the pathogens get in might be the future.
Moving to humans, I've mentioned mRNA technology is being used to create treatments for cancer. This week it was announced that in a study of 14 patients with triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), over a period of 5-6 years, only 3 had a relapse/recurrence (one of whom unfortunately had developed a different cancer). TNBC is fast and aggressive, with generally a 40% chance of relapse after treatment. All of the patients were given personalised tailored mRNA vaccines which taught their immune system to recognise and attack the cancer.
It's a very small study, but a great result, and takes mRNA back to the reason it was developed in the first place - to fight cancer.
It's the weekend, and for a lot of folk it's been or will be half term. If you've had to juggle work and entertaining the kids, if you've had Norovirus or the news is making you sad, you deserve a treat. Even if you haven't, you've earnt one too - the weather has been grey and miserable, and we all need something to bring us some joy. Be kind to yourself, do something nice for you, make yourself smile.
I'll be back in 2 weeks, until then...
