LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 918 Spyder set 75910 review

This is our 3rd LEGO Speed Champions review and the last of the three £12.99 Hybrid Supercars sets. The Porsche 918 Spyder is another really intricate, yet not tricky, build which constructs an amazingly solid vehicle that can be played with by children as a toy car.

Inside the box are 3 un-numbered bags, plus a sheet of stickers and this time a single instruction booklet.

Third day and third car, my partner put this together so quickly that by the time I'd made the coffee, it was too late for build shots. Here's a 'deconstructed' photo which also shows some of the interior detail around the drivers seat.

As with the other models there are tiny details within the build that leave slithers of colour and make subtle difference, but it's part of what makes these models great, and it makes it a lot easier for younger builders to follow more complicated and intricate instructions.

The only new parts we see are the windscreen - open top of course - and the brilliant interchangeable wheel trims. These are a great feature. So simple, yet they add so much.

There are some lovely parts to this build. The stickers for these Speed Champions vehicles are lovely and incredibly detailed. You can't do it justice in photo's really - especially not with the amount of daylight we get in Manchester in February. No room for a dashboard though...

LEGO Porsche 918 Spyder 75910 Hybrid Supercar details

The car itself is more similar to the Ferrari LaFerrari (review is here..) than the McLaren P1 (review is here..) in that it is a little blocky and doesn't quite have the sleek profile of the real car at most angles. I know the 918 Spyder is usually silver and that wouldn't have been financially possible, but the grey doesn't quite do it for me. Of the 3 LEGO Hybrid Supercars, I think the Porsche Spyder is possibly the least flattering.

The accessory with the Porsche 918 Spyder set is the chequered flag...simple and obvious, but it really helps stimulate creativity and imagination, and adds excellent play value.

The rear end is as detailed as the McLaren P1 and the LaFerrari, and without that rear spoiler you can see the classic Spyder shape built into the model. A lovely touch you also can't see on the photo is that it says Porsche on the top line of that sticker under the spoiler.

The Porsche 918 Spyder driver is the only one we've seen so far with detail on his back - something which surprises me about these sets. They're quite understated if you consider the subject matter.

A final two photos to show that sometimes, it's all about the angle...

The LEGO Speed Champions Porsche 918 Spyder set 75910 is an incredibly sturdy vehicle that'll withstand a race or two from the younger members of your family, and can also take pride of place on a shelf. Excellent value for money and a great all-round set. The build age suggestion is 7+ and although my nearly 5 year old can nearly build it alone, the age guide is right because it isn't instantly rewarding enough for a younger builder.

LEGO Speed Champions is a brand new range to be released at the beginning of March 2015. There are 7 sets with 8 different fast cars, a truck and pit crew. Prices vary depending on the size of the set. The Porsche 918 Spyder set 75910 retails at £12.99 and we make it 155  pieces. All of the Speed Champions sets have a recommended age of 7+ and in our opinion that is spot on.

    1. It is a bit chunky. There is only so much you can do with LEGO, and the 918 is a lot chunkier than some of it's predecessors anyway, but it is a bit less profiled than I expected :)
