Christmas Giveaway: Science Mad Chemistry Lab (age 10+) Sent for Review

The Science Mad Chemistry Lab is a proper Chemistry set designed for children who are ready to move on from volcanoes and start looking deeper into why their world works as it does. Trends UK have sent us this set to review with my 11 year old, and my 9 1/2 year old joined in with some extra close supervision...

We are a household who love science and my boys have grown up experimenting. I'll start by saying this is an awesome Chemistry set. The price is brilliant for the kit included and the experiments are genuinely age 10+ and incredibly exciting for my boys. Here's why we think that...

Science Mad Chemistry set review box contents included

Inside the cardboard box is a plastic insert holding all of your equipment. There are over 20 pieces of equipment, including several made from real glass - the spirit burner, stirring rod, a glass tube, 2 test tubes, beaker and conical flask - so we've opted to keep ours in the box between use for safety.

Science Mad Chemistry Lab chemicals included in the set

Also included are adjustable safety goggles and 10 assorted chemicals in plastic containers with safety caps, plus indicator paper and filter paper and lots of other pieces of equipment.

You aren't left on your own, there's an instruction booklet with all 100 experiments, which can be used start to finish as a learning tool, or you can just pick an experiment because it looks good. It also has information about how to use equipment and chemicals safely.

There are a few household items (e.g. vinegar, foil) which you need to complete all of the experiments, plus water, matches and the methylated spirits for the burner (available cheaply at larger supermarkets, motor factors, Wilkinsons, Tool Station etc).

Because you are using a naked flame, you will need to tie back long hair and wear safety goggles in case your experiment spits. I'd also advise you save little tiny glass or plastic bottles with lids, to hold mixed chemicals as you work. Don't store them for long periods because you don't know if they'll give off a gas and explode, or worse! I don't know what worse is, but we don't want to find out.

The Science Mad Chemistry Lab is ideal for science-loving or curious children, it'll teach them how to think like a scientist and very soon they'll be expanding on what they're doing and asking "what happens if....?". It's a great set to really engage the child and get them excited about chemistry. It does need adult supervision, which really was no chore. There is a fantastic range of real experiments with genuinely exciting results.

The Science Mad Chemistry Lab is suitable for young scientists aged 10+, but has plenty of scope to keep them interested for a while. My 20 year old is a science student at uni and had a great time with it! It's especially perfect to tap into the enthusiasm children around 10-13 have when they start to be trusted with things like fire or acids.

The rrp for this set is £29.99, which is really fair and offers great value. I found prices on Amazon were very high when I looked, and at the time of typing it's reduced to £25.99 in Smyths and £22.49 at Very! A great steal!

I'm delighted to say that Trends Toys have offered a Science Mad Chemistry Lab as a Christmas Present for one of my readers. Entry to the giveaway is by the Gleam form below. No entries are mandatory, but each extra task completed will earn more entries into the random draw at the end.

The sweepstake giveaway will end at midnight Sunday 8th December and is open to UK entrants only. If you are new to Gleam there's a link to help, as well as my other Christmas Present Giveaways, on my Giveaways page...
