Ice Age Collision Course AR Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Books in our house are usually screen-free and mainly read in the bedroom. Occasionally though a book needs to be let loose a little, and the Ice Age Collision Course Augmented Reality Book by Emily Steed (on sale June 2nd) can definitely use more space. By downloading the free app. your phone or tablet can bring the characters from the book to life in your own home....or even outside your own home...

The new Ice Age movie is released in July this year, and it will see our favourite characters (including Manny, Scrat, Sid and Diego) travel a little higher than before - in space. Ice Age Collision Course AR gives us an insight into an some of the scrapes they will be getting themselves into. The first section of the book lets you help Scrat chase his eternal nemesis - the acorn...

The hardbacked book is fully illustrated in colour using images from the movie, and over the 32 pages you can get to know all about the characters, new and old.

The special feature though, is the AR - augmented reality. Using your smartphone or tablet, on the screen the app. superimposes an image over reality...you can move around to get a better view, and you can increase the size to 'lifesize' to get an idea of how big the characters would really be. It's excellent, although our rabbit Edgar wasn't very participatory!

Manny the Mammoth was a bit big full sized to fit in our living room and still let us see all of him, so we took him outside...

By moving further away, I was able to fit more of him in one snapshot, but it was very difficult to fit the whole mammoth in!

They were clearly massive! And probably very scary. Here's a recreation of that terror from our boys...

It's a great book on it's own, there is plenty to read and learn, but with the app. it's brilliant. Not only does it have the AR, it also has the game from the beginning of the post, and a couple of other surprises. We had loads of fun, and even though we never managed to get a perfect shot of the mammoth chasing the boys, it didn't matter. We can do it again another day...

The neighbours of course can't see the mammoth, and probably think we're completely insane....

Ice Age Collision Course AR book is published by Carlton Books, released on June 2nd and has an rrp of £9.99. The app. is free to download from either iTunes or Android Play Store.

  1. Logan said he would make a rhino tiger hybrid, it would be super smart and have the stealth of a tiger and the strength of a rhino

  2. A pink hornless rhino named Rose who can skate like a ballerina!

  3. I would have a large but very beautiful and gentle pigeonosaurus. Like today's much smaller pigeons, this bird is intelligent, resourceful, fast and kind. Its kindness would be its undoing, though, as all other creatures of that time were predators and wiped out the pigeonosaurus because they were a delicious snack for dinosaurs.

  12. I would include an orphaned Hyena pup who only remembers his name is 'Chuck' (short for Chuckles) who is a little scamp and full of practicle jokes. The guys think he's just a dog and don't understand why he's so cheerful even though he's lost his entire family and the world is collapsing all around their ears?
